We all know the original way to add and subtract but are you up to date on the new ways that are being taught to your children? If not, here are some examples for you to follow and use as a guide.
Addition Strategies:
1) Adding One Number in Parts is when you add the second addend in parts to the first addend. This means you would add the hundreds first, tens second, then finally the ones.
Ex: 235+144= 235 + 100= 335, 335+ 40= 375, 375+4=379
2) Adding By Place is when you break apart both addends and add each place together separately. Then you combine them all together at the very end.
Ex: 235+144=
200 + 100= 300
30+40= 70
5+ 4= 9
300 + 70+ 9= 379
3) Using a Number Line is when you draw a number line and start with your first addend. Then you add the second addend in chunks. So if I started my number line at 235 I would jump 100 to land on 335. Then I would jump 40 and land on 375. Lastly, I would jump 4 and land on 379.
Subtraction Strategies:
1) Subtracting One Number in Parts is a strategy that is very similar to adding one number in parts except you subtract instead of add.
Ex #1: 167-34=
167- 30= 137
137-4= 133
Ex #2: 334-125=
334-100= 234
234-20=214
214-5=209
