Civic Issues: Problems that citizens face in our community, state, and world.
Examples: Homelessness, Hunger, Natural Disasters, Bullying, etc..

Now that you have completed research on your civic issue, what is your plan to help those who are in need because of it? How could you and your family make a difference in the lives of others dealing with the issue you researched? Please share 2-3 ideas of what you could do to make the world a better place for someone else.

1) Benji has two boxes filled with bags of strawberries and kiwis. One box has 7 bags of 8 strawberries and the other box has 6 bags of 9 kiwis. How many fruits does Benji have altogether?

2) If you add 4 of me, you get 20. Who am I?

3) If you multiply me by 7 and then add 7 to the product, you get 6X7. Who am I?

Our 2nd pen-pal letters will soon be on their way to California! In this day and age of technology we can’t forget that feeling one gets when recieving a handwritten letter through the mail! Having a pen-pal from another state/country encourages children to learn more about another place in the world and maybe helps to create a life long friendship that you never knew you could have.

This trimester our Social Studies focus is on Civic Issues in our communities and how citizens like ourselves can become active & pono community members who help make our world a better place for everyone through positive actions!

The purpose of this huaka’i was to teach and show our keiki the types of civic issues people are dealing with and how local organizations are taking a stand to help these citizens.

We first traveled to Under His Wings Ministry where we learned that workers and volunteers provide food, clothes, and love to those who need it.
We then traveled to The Salvation Army and Lincoln Park. The Salvation Army taught us that they also help anyone who needs extra support. You can just be hungry, need affordable clothing, or emotional support and The Salvation Army will be there for you.
We also heard from Aunty Kellyn who is a worker at the Hilo YWCA. She taught us how they help women and children. If women need help finding a preschool for their keiki or learning how to take care of their baby, YWCA is the place for them.
