Stereotyping – Is It Positive or Negative?

Assignment:

  1. Select a picture of any person, regardless of gender, age, race, etc in a magazine or newspaper.  This picture should really “speak” to you in order for you to be successful at this assignment.
  2. You may choose someone famous, but you must rename and choose a different occupation for this person.
  3. Write a biography about the person you have chosen – based on what you perceive by the person’s looks, body language, etc.  The biography should include as many of the following as possible:  name, background, education level, special interests of the person, his or her career, whether he is single or married, and hobbies.  This may be humorous, but not disrespectful.
  4. You are to glue the picture to the biography, and practice reading you writing aloud, looking for any obvious grammatical errors.
  5. You will read your prepared biographies to the class.

Slang Group Presentations

Assignment:

  1. As a group select a slang group to portray a breakdown in communication.
  2. Each group will make a list of 20 vocabulary words used by this group and a definition of each word.  (example:  Surfers – dude, cook, da kine)
  3. Each group will write a two minute conversation/skit utilizing most of all of the words on the list.  Everyone must participate in the conversation.  The scripts may be used to read the conversation to the class.
  4. On presentation day, each group reads the vocabulary words to the class without the definitions, before the conversations are read.
  5. After reading the conversation, group members should go back and read the definitions to the class to make it clear that language barriers do indeed create breakdowns.

Who I Am Speech

Assignment:

  1. Introduce yourself to the class by taking us through a journey of your 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade year.
  2. Select a symbol from each area: movie title, advertising slogan, points of interest, weather outlook, or create your own symbols.
  3. Include a creative introduction and conclusion.
  4. Explain each symbol with a story or example that pertains to your life.
  5. Do some good thinking (intrapersonal communication) about your expectations for this year and the symbols that you feel represent this year (perception).

  • Presentations will be on August 17.
