Subtracting One Number in Parts

Your child may have come home and explained to you that they learned a new way to subtract called Subtracting One Number In Parts and your reaction may have been, “Huh, what’s that?” If so, here is an example/explanation of how it works. Good luck mathematicians!

Problem: 233 – 126 = ? 1) Start with original equation
233 – 100= 133 2) First number stays the same. Split second number into it’s place
133- 20= 113 value parts. Minus one hundred first.
113- 6 = 107 3) Next, take your balance and minus twenty from it.
4) Finally, take your balance and minus six from it.
