Class of 2016 Waikiki Beach Clean Up

  • Unknown

The freshmen SS Homeroom will be participating in a algae removal on April 19th, 2013 at Waikiki Beach.

To Students: While you watch this link please consider the following questions:

1) How long has it been since the alien limu was introduced?

2) What are the impacts of this alien invasive species on our natural ecosystem?

As you can see…something so small can grow and take over a large area affecting others that are in its area. This could be associated with how our actions and choices in life also are apart of a larger ecosystem (classmates, teachers, school, family, community, etc.).

When we are choosing to not complete a task- is this a positive or negative choice for ourselves?  With your choice, who else is effected? To undo this choice, how much energy and time would it take versus completing the original task in the beginning?

What about if we are feeling angry or sad- is this a positive (tank filler) or negative (tank depleter)  for ourselves?

Ripple

For the past 8 months we have looked at aspects of your academic and personal life. We have asked you to take a plunge in participating in forum discussions about H.A.L.T, triggers, thanksgiving, and relationships.

As your freshmen year comes to a close, please take the time to consider how these experiences over the past 8 months are impacting your life.

This field trip is not only to assist in giving back to the ‘aina, but it is also about reflecting on yourself. If something was planted long ago- a foreign, potentially negative thought or experience- please reflect on how difficult it is to huki (or pull) it out. Similar to the work that will be involved in the removal of the alien invasive species.

Please provide us with a pre-fieldtrip reflection

(provide this in your e-portfolio under a new page titled: experiences):

1) State what you feel you have had in your life that is similar to the alien invasive seaweed.

2) Do you anticipate that it will be easy or hard to remove these items (the feelings as well as the invasive seaweed).

3) Throughout your freshmen year you may have had good and bad things take root in your life- please reflect on some of those.

ENJOY YOUR EXPERIENCE ON APRIL 19TH!!!!

In case you need it here is the tutorial on how to create the page: experiences[1]

Follow Up…Reflection

Even if you have not participated in the field trip please reflect on the following questions:

1) You are weeks away from completing your freshmen year at Kamehameha. Please reflect on the experiences that you have had that:

  • reflect positive growth (similar to the “limu”- native seaweed)
  • reflect negative growth (similar to the alien invasive seaweed)

2) Have you “up-rooted” any negative growth in your academics or social life? Please be specific with your examples. If you went on the field trip please also include your feelings of the experience of pulling the alien invasive seaweed.

3) Post your favorite picture of the field trip! If you didn’t get to attend post a pic of your favorite SS event- feel free to give some sort of caption on it too :).
