Choosing a “JUST RIGHT” Book.

five-finger-ruleThe 5 finger rule is simple and help students find a book that is “just right” and true to their reading level. Here are the steps: 1) Choose a book that you think you want to read.  2) Open the book to the second page or the second page of the first chapter.  3)  Read the page. 4) For every word that you can’t read or have to really sound out word, put a finger up.  If you have 5 fingers up, that means your book is too hard.  If you have 1-3 fingers up, that means your book is JUST RIGHT!

Met the Challenge & Sharing ALOHA!

QR-Code---Post5BCongratulations to ‘Ulili in Papa ‘Elima 5B who was selected as  the winner of the QR Code Scavenger Hunt Challenge! She was among 7 other students in her class that scored a PERFECT grade on this library activity.  How did she get so lucky? Her awesome classmate Ehulani was the original winner of the challenge give-away and she decided to pass on the gift to someone else as she already has a Hawaiian nupepa word game.  We all recognized her action of “going beyond herself” and sharing ALOHA with her classmate!  Snaps for our two lovely kaikamahine!

Scavenger Hunt In The Library

QR-Code-PostPapa ‘Elima – 5A used QR Codes to learn about the various collections that are in the learning center.  Their task was to scan each code that gave a hint about a particular collection in the library.  With the ho’ohani (hint), they needed to physically locate the collection, choose a resource, and write the title and call number on their worksheet.  They were challenged to work hard and strive for 100% correct.  Those students who met the challenge; their name was placed in a drawing for a prize (Hawaiian Word Game).  And the winner is……………….  Ocean A!  Clap, Clap, Clap! More than half of this awesome class did exceptionally well! I am SO PROUD of our Papa ‘Elima!

ABC Order

ABC-Order---KindergartenToday our Kindergartener’s learned how books are organized on the bookshelf.  They learned first-hand by using their last names as authors of their own book then organizing themselves in ABC order as if they were human books on a bookshelf. This was a fun activity and everyone got to participate.  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

Becoming Independent Users of the Library

SBCP---Grade-3One of our goals for our haumāna (student) is for them to become independent users of the library.  In doing so, our students need to know how to navigate through the library catalog, how to conduct a simple search, how to read the record and then locate the resources in the library.  Papa ‘Ekolu did a “Grandtastic” job today searching the OPAC (online public access catalog) and locating resources in the non-fiction collection.  I am confident that with practice & opportunities to use the OPAC, these students will be independent users of libraries!
