Tasi’s Gift – Book of the Month.

I’m just loving these moments when I get to read aloud a good book to my students K-5; a wonderful book that ties in culture, life-lessons, and the true meaning of LOVE.  Love for  ‘ohana, the ‘aina, people and animals. In my opinion, this book would be a winner for the Caldecott Award.  The illustrations are beautiful! If ever you have a chance to read this lovely book, please share with me your thoughts, insights of the characters, and what you learned from this tale.

To find out more about these features, click on “Nonfiction Keys” on the menu section of my blog.

Idioms, Amelia Bedelia, & QR Codes

Who would ever imagine using QR Code’s in an educational setting. Today, our Papa ‘Ekahi had fun using QR Codes to learn more about idioms.  They also learned that QR  stands for “Quick Response” and when scanning the code with a QR Reader, it will link to a website, a video, a text, or a picture that shares information about the content of study. We talked about how using QR Codes can make learning FUN and it’s an easy way to get directly to the website without having to fumble through typing in the URL.

Brigitta of the White Forest

Our Papa Mala’o classes had a very special visit by an author from Canada who writes children books.  Mrs. Danika Dinsmore (writer, teacher, & performer) took time from her very busy schedule to visit with us in the Learning Center.  With the release of her new book Brigitta of the White Forest Mrs. Dinsmore opened our minds to use our imagination as she read to us.  She took us on a wonderful & magical tour of the imaginary faerie forest.  Mahalo Nui e Mrs. Dinsmore for sharing the day with us.

Pair & Share – Two is better than 1!

Taking notes can be over-whelming especially when information is being presented  audibly.  Our fabulous 3rd and 5th graders did a terrific job at taking notes on two notable women (Amelia Earhart & Queen Lili’uokalani). They paid attention to only the important information and wrote them down on their Circle Map. Pairing and sharing notes is another skill they used to gather more details.  Maika’i Loa e nā Haumāna!

NOTE-TAKING – Strategies for Success!

What does it take to be a good note-taker? Our third and fourth graders have been busy doing research & used these strategies when taking notes.

  • Pay Attention
  • Be Organized
  • Be Brief

What does it mean to Pay Attention? It means to use your listening, writing, and observation skills when presented with information.  How about to Be Organized? It means to utilize organization strategies like using numbers, bullets, & words to organize important information.  What about to Be Brief? This means to use summarization strategies to collect only the important ideas.

I hope you find these note-taking strategies helpful and useful.
