Caldecott Challenge!

Aloha e nā ‘Ohana ma ka Papa Mala’o!

Our Kindergarten classes have the opportunity to engage in  a READING CHALLENGE.  Now until December 17th, each child in papa mala’o is rising to the challenge of reading       10 Caldecott Books! YES, only 10 books! When the challenge is met, they will be invited to the Learning Center for a Celebration.  A Caldecott Challenge worksheet  was given to each child to keep track of their reading.  I would like to encourage you to read along with your child and make the reading fun and enjoyable.

Here is a pre-reading activity that we did today to familiarize students with the text they were about to read. As each vocabulary word was written on the chart paper, students used their prediction skills to make meaning of what the story would be about.  They also used the front cover of the book, the illustration and title to help bring meaning to the story.

Enjoy the reading moments with your child! Oh, go ahead and ask your child why these books are called Caldecott Books and why did it win an award.

Ke Aloha, Kumu Kanani
