Grade 2: Seek & Apply Knowledge

Benchmark 1-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will identify similarities and differences in a variety of natural and designed systems.

Grade 5: Seek & Apply Knowledge

Benchmark 1-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will show relationships between the structure and function of parts in interacting systems.

Benchmark 2-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will draw conclusions about system function and the structure of its parts based upon evidence from their investigation.

Grade 8: Seek & Apply Knowledge

Benchmark 1-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT:  Science students will understand that…the formulation of a hypothesis involves the synthesis of multiple perspectives by utilizing traditional (Indigenous) knowledge and current (contemporary) knowledge (context).

Relational Concepts: Hypothesis — multiple perspectives (traditional and current knowledge)

BENCHMARK:  Students will develop the ability to discern with others what to preserve and what to change in order for future generations to thrive.

Benchmark 2-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT: Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that an experiment is designed to gather evidence and use it to support or refute a hypothesis.

BENCHMARK:  Students will design and conduct an experiment using the scientific method as a contribution of knowledge.

Benchmark 3-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT: Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will describe various Earth systems and their components and characterize how changes over time in a natural system would affect a designed system.

Biology: Seek & Apply Knowledge

Benchmark 1-

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK: Students will reflect on their kuleana* and stewardship practices that demonstrate a sense of place and their roles in the ecosystem.

Benchmark 3-

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will utilize appropriate technology* to evaluate issues related to biological systems. (e.g. global warming, genetic engineering, sustainability)    

*technology is the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes    

Chemistry: Seek & Apply Knowledge

Benchmark 1-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT: Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will demonstrate how the hydrologic cycle is essential to healthy systems. 

Benchmark 2-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT: Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will demonstrate how the phases of the hydrologic cycle are dependent on thermodynamics.

Benchmark 3-

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will demonstrate how the properties of water affect living systems (e.g. pH, H-bonding, polarity, solubility, colligative properties, density, specific heat).

Physics: Seek & Apply Knowledge

Benchmark 1-

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will evaluate systems utilizing vectors, to be able to predict and perform calculations, and represent physical quantities in graphical form.

Benchmark 2-

STRAND CONCEPT STATEMENT: Critical thinking utilizes multiple perspectives to form an idea.

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Evaluate the dependent and independent variables in an experiment, and demonstrate an understanding of their relationships to one another.

Benchmark 3-

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Students will explain and predict different patterns of motion of objects using words, pictures, graphs and equations.

(e.g., linear and uniform circular motion, velocity and acceleration, momentum and inertia)

Benchmark 4-

DISCIPLINE CONCEPT STATEMENT: Students will understand that natural and designed systems and their components form interdependent and dynamic relationships.

BENCHMARK:  Describe and quantify energies, their transformations and applications in everyday life.
