In our sonnets about the Six Plus One Traits of Writing, we used the words elegant, brilliant, and radiant to describe writing.  Below we feature some of our elegance, brilliance, and radiance in writing.

From our Fahrenheit 451 closing quick writes:

  • There are many different ways to fight these fires; your job is to find the right way for your situation. –Sam A.
  • Happiness is outside the box; society locks you in. –Gabby C.
  • If you continue to keep running your heads down in the mud, the dirtier your thought process will become. –Lexi F.
  • In Fahrenheit 451, they burned all of the world’s past mistakes to get rid of them, not knowing they left open a door to the past. –Jordan K.
  • There will always be a burning sensation and passion to fight for, protect, and standy by what is right. –Chelline K.
  • Montag is trying to fight the fire and raise humanity from the ashes. Even though Montag knows that once things start to look good again, mankind will be thrown right back into the fire. –Maika‘i K.
  • We need to live in such a manner that we use the fire to keep us alive, not make the fire so big it burns us and everything with it. –Justin S.
  • You have the power to fight back against the fire with fire of your own. –Tayler S.
  • If there must be a disagreement, we need to learn to disagree without being disagreeable. If we don’t, that’s where we succumb to the fire, and all is lost. –Kahaka V.
  • Don’t be afraid to change, but make sure you remember why you changed. –John W.
  • There will always be a fire, but it is our decision whether to help fight it or let it burn. –Hunter W.

IDEAS / ORGANIZATION / WORD CHOICE / SENTENCE FLUENCY /
VOICE / CONVENTIONS / PRESENTATION

By Hunter W.
Six plus one traits of writing are needed,
To write an essay the teacher will love.
If the rules of writing go unheeded,
You’ll get a grade you won’t want to speak of.
Your paper will be graded on six rules:
Organization, ideas, and voice.
Don’t be lazy, use the whole set of tools:
Sentence fluency, conventions, word choice.
But wait, there is one more trait you must know.
Presentation is an important part.
It is the overall balance and flow.
A good presentation shows it is art.
Follow these rules and you’ll get a good grade.
Follow these rules you won’t need any aid.

IDEAS

Big to Small Ideas
By Kimani F., Brendan U., and Shaina U.
The beating heart of individuals
The very center of a person’s soul
One is different and original
How everyone has a dream or a goal
It has the beginning, middle, and end
It brings forth the thesis and your great thoughts
The way you choose to write it all depends
On how well the idea that was brought
Without it there is no story or plot
There is no extra thinking or meaning
Take your great ideas out of a knot
And let it rise so it needs no cleaning
Ideas always come as a surprise
The laughter that comes with them never dies

What Built the Earth
By Micah A., Kela K., and Taevyn R.
Ideas are the theme in a passage
The message of stories start with a thought
It takes ideas to pass your classes
Finding ideas will help you a lot
Ideas are the roots of a strong theme
They are clear, engaging and relevant
There should be details to back up your dream
A thesis like this would be elegant
An idea was the cause of the states
Without that thought, where would we all be now?
Could you imagine our contrasting fates?
So pay attention to this final vow
Ideas are the things that built the earth
How much do you think an idea’s worth?

By Sam A., Noah G., and Talia L.
In writing ideas are important
If you do not properly develop
Them, your paper will not be brilliant.
Supporting details, you must envelop.
When ideas are strong, message is clear.
Ideas make the paper successful.
Don’t get caught in the headlights like a deer.
A successful paper is beautiful.
When writing ideas choose words with care
To capture and express your idea
Awesome, rich, well thought of words are your snare
To paint your mana’o; so no “fea”
Write your ideas when feelings are strong
Choose, develop, support; you can’t go wrong!

ORGANIZATION

Internal Organization
By Daniel K., Jaelynn N., and Iokepa S.
Organization is key to writing
It’s the internal structure of the piece
Your paper should have all the words linking
Organization is a brutal tease
It runs on a track and should not wander
Keeping on the same path can be tricky
So be aware to make your stance clearer
Straying from main ideas can get sticky
Patterns and sequences are in this task
Not too many facts are given at once
Arrange all your info and don’t look back
ʻCause good writing shines bright with radiance
Make sure your writing comes to a good close
So your work will be better than your foes

Organization Is Key
By Kaha‘i B., Tani K., and Justin S.
To organize is to arrange your thoughts
To show the way you actually feel
You can show us the ideas you got
And really increase your papers appeal
To  organize is really quite simple
It is not as endearing as it seems
place ideas in order, be civil
Correlate thoughts with your overall theme
Every writing needs organization
Without it, expect a big cluttered mess
With this trait and great punctuation
You can and will be better than the rest
To convey your thoughts, just realize
The key to success is organize

By Jadelyn C., Karlee C., Jordan K., and Kamalei R.
Organization, a world of pure peace
Another can not take its place for me
If we did not have it, we’d be like geese
Just a branch of the literary tree
Organization, results in neatness
Structure, symmetry, standardization
With no order we would become much less
Mess, enemy of organization
It is key to be successful in school
Teachers do proclaim that it is needed
Freshman to senior it is a good tool
Papers went everywhere as I pleaded
Essays are due when I am not ready
Because of that my grades are unsteady

WORD CHOICE

Choose Wisely
By Lexi F., Kainalu K., and Kahopewai M.
Vocabulary is key when writing
A thesaurus is there to help you out
So you and your teacher won’t be fighting
That way you and your teacher will not shout
Be aware of who you are speaking to
When talking to a child, speak simple words
So don’t you say random words like shoe glue
And make sure you’re not speaking to the birds
It’s hard and it’s tough, but life is real rough
Words can be big and words can be smaller
Think before you speak, you might get in cuffs
Then, you will have to get out with dollars
Think before you speak should be the motto
When writing poems, you’ll need a bottle

By Meaaloha M., Isaiah Q., and Justice R.
Word choice is what our poem will be about
It is a writer’s selection of words.
A web dictionary will help you out.
You can do it also, not just the nerds.
If you need synonyms and antonyms,
You can look some up in a thesaurus.
You can even do this while singing hymns.
Some word choices can make you feel anxious.
Don’t worry we will help you understand.
It can be a struggle but not always.
Have no worries we can give you a hand.
There are many sentences to rephrase.
And you can use hundreds of different words.
You may think this poem is very absurd.

SENTENCE FLUENCY
Fluent in Sentences
By Nathan F., Maika‘i K., and Nat W.
Sentence fluency does make writing flow.
Words and patterns to make these things nice.
Fluency seems to make words stop and go.
Flowing your words so you dont say things twice.
Be repetitive and make these things rhyme.
These things come together when you can write.
When you speak aloud, it sounds right with time.
When it comes together you see the light.
Thinking about flow can be difficult.
Whether phrases rhyme is good to think of.
Trying to find rhymes makes me somersault.
When I do find them I do fall in love.
All these things come natural when you find out.
That poems are simple without a doubt.

By Kukui G., Kaili H., and Kainoa H.
Listen to the natural rhythm and flow.
Pay close attention to your sentence length.
The word patterns should make your mind blow.
Phrases in your sentences should have strength.
Pay attention to your sentence structure.
Sentences begin in a different way.
So have an idea you cannot puncture.
Words can come to you night and day.
You should use long phrases and short phrases.
All of your sentences need to make sense.
Your sentences can turn into phases.
Do not make your sentences worth two cents.
Write different sentences when you are down,
And your sentence fluency will come around.

Where everything comes together at last.
Hours of hard work make it worth the wait.
So get ready to share it with the class.
If you put in the effort it will show
You should also use the right font to prep
When you are proud of your work people know
But don’t forget to include the last step
Last but not least is MLA format
M.L.A is what you need to proceed
Even though you may not think it’s all that
It will help you pass, this is guaranteed
Presentation is very important
