May is Mental Health Month

Mental Health America launched Mental Health Awareness Month in 1949 to increase awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and share resources to help people cope, live a higher quality of life, and heal emotional and psychological wounds. The first week of May, Childrens’ Mental Health Awareness Week, rallies the effort of mental health communities across the nation to bring its focus on our youth.

Mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well-being, and mental illnesses are common and treatable. It is important to understand early symptoms of mental illness and know when certain behaviors are potentially signs of something more. We need start the education efforts early and most often times the first point of access is in our schools. When we engage in prevention and early identification, we can help reduce the burden of mental illness by identifying symptoms and warning signs early—and provide effective treatment. Naviance Parent Night- Nov 9, 2016

On November 9th, 2016, Middle School counselors hosted a Parent Night on College and Career Readiness. Parents in attendance had a first hand look at how Naviance is personalizing the postsecondary planning for their students. Field Trip to UHMC

At the start of the year, Kula Waena counselors use a needs assessment to ask haumāna for feedback on a wide range of academic and personal/social topics. The information gathered is used to inform curriculum, interventions and various support services. One area that students consistently express interest in learning more about is planning options after high school. In response to this feedback, counselors reached out to University of Hawaii’s Maui Campus to collaborate on a field trip for our 8th graders during their Career Days.

In it’s second year, the field trip has grown to include five departments: Agriculture, Media, Culinary, Hospitality and the newly rennovated Dental Hygiene Department with it’s brand new training facility. 8th grader and Hiki Nō crew member, Kalia Franco, captured a few snapshots of this year’s field trip and the 8th graders as they toured the departments and listened to instructors talk about the opportunities available in each field, the importance of post-high education and what skills are needed to be successful both in and out of school. Mahalo nui to everyone at UHMC who made our field trip such a success!
