The Physical Education Program is designed to develop the emotional, mental, physical, and social aspects of living necessary for a happy and productive life.

Students are introduced to the fundamentals of team and individual sports, which include skills, rules, and game strategy as well as swimming and physical fitness.

Emphasis in the program is placed on providing an opportunity for individual growth and success.

COURSE GOALS:

To maintain and improve on physical, social, and mental fitness.

To develop a basic knowledge of skills, cleanliness, sportsmanship, and leadership.

To instill growth through interaction with others in non-competitive and competitive situations.

To instill healthy life habits that will help them become productive citizens at school, home and in the community.

COURSE MATERIALS:

Various internet websites, handouts and multimedia sources, fitness folders are used to keep track of student’s progress.  Skill progression is developed through verbal instruction/demonstration and student practice time.

LEARNER EXPECTATIONS:

Kamehameha students are expected to do their personal best. Everyone has different abilities and talents, and students should work hard on improving them. It is their kuleana. They must learn how to cooperate and work well with
their peers. The purpose of the program is to help them accomplish this.

General Information:

*Be on time
*Wear proper PE uniform and PE sneakers
*Turn in assignments at the beginning of class
*Participate daily
*Excused absences- make up work unless it is a medical excuse, ie., broken leg *Shower at the end of each class
*Keep an extra pair of undergarments and socks in your locker
*Keep locker locked – return at the end of the year. ($7 for missing locks)
*Pick up after yourself
*Secure your belongings
*No Loitering or horseplay in the locker rooms
*Students will not enter the office or equipment areas unless given permission by the teacher
*NO CELL PHONES IN THE LOCKER ROOM

Student Needs:
1. Three P.E. Shirts labeled as instructed by P.E. Teacher.
2. Three P.E. Shorts labeled as instructed by P.E. Teacher.
3. Athletic Shoes preferably no skateboarding shoes or black soles.
4. Socks as defined by handbook.
5. Personal Hygiene products i.e. shampoo, body soap, deodorant, brush, etc.
6. Extra undergarments and socks to be left in their lockers.

PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS

SWIMMING POOL RULES AND REGULATIONS:

*School issued One piece bathing suit.
*Shower prior to entering pool.
*Walk on pool deck.
*No pushing or shoving people into the pool
*Students with a fever, open sores, or bandaged wounds are not allowed in pool. *Contamination is prohibited.
*All swim classes missed must be made up except medical conditions with a doctor note.
Classes not made up will result in a zero.  Communication is very important with the teacher as to when make-ups will be done.  After school is also an option.

Students will need to bring a one bathing suit and towel to class on swim days. KS PE towels are not allowed to go to the HS pool.
Goggles are strongly encouraged.

**PE uniforms are required during every PE class meeting. Lack of PE uniform will result in the following:
  PER TRIMESTER 3 days no uniform (Level 1-­Dress code violation) = 5 days teacher detention using card + parent contact via phone or email + point deduction from cumulative “formative uniform” grade.

GRADING:

80% Summative Assessment=

*Run times/ based on individual effort/improvement
*Swim times/ based on individual effort/improvement
*Skills/performance- final
*Big Run, Biathlon (6th), 2 mile run (7th)
*Final tests

20% Formative=

*Run times
*swim times
*Class work
*Journal writing
*Teacher and self -evaluations
*Quizzes
*Homework

Warm-up and activities/sports are also graded for participation, effort, sportsmanship, and showing respect to the teacher, self, and others.

If students cannot participate due to an injury or illness, they will be sent to the health room unless they have a note from the parents/guardians.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO THIS YEAR?

The running program at the middle school is designed to help improve their cardiovascular endurance and to prepare them for the high school PE program. All students will participate in the BIG RUN 1.5 miles.   The run is fun, challenging, and rewarding. Each child is expected to do his/her personal best. We will work towards their individual goals for this run.
At the end of the year, 6th grade students will compete in a Biathlon; a 200 yard swim and a one mile run (parent volunteers will be solicited,) and 7th grade students will run a 2 mile run summative run.

Please ask your child to show you their google classroom assignment regarding the acknowledgment of this SYLLABUS and have them turn it in.
