Diversity of Life

[KH01427]

Year; Open to grades 10-12; Prerequisite: Biology

  • Fulfills 1.0 credit towards KHS science graduation requirement.

This project-based course will introduce haumāna to the unique, beautiful, bizarre, and extraordinary types of life on Earth, from the microscopic to the macroscopic. Haumāna will learn about organisms from the six biological kingdoms (Archaea, Bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia) plus viruses. Endemic species will be highlighted. Running themes for each kingdom include understanding what makes the organisms in each kingdom unique, the roles of those organisms in the environment, and the significance of those organisms to humans. In addition to lab investigations that will involve observing and studying actual organisms, haumāna will explore, research, and learn about organisms that interest them. By learning about the diversity of life, haumāna can begin to answer the overarching question of “What can organisms teach us?” and use nature’s wisdom to better take care of our Earth.
