 Aloha mai käkou and welcome to 8thgrade Hawaiian Language where students continue to develop and improve their language skills through the 21stcentury skills.  Students initiate and engage in meaningful conversations and write short compositions on various topics using greater complexity in language expression.

Course Goals/Objectives:

The major goal in Hawaiian Language is to inspire a passion to ʻōlelo in order to empower our lāhui.  Students will be using ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi as the vehicle for learning various concepts and skills.

 Areas of Study

Language topics/themes that will be covered during the year include, but are not limited to:

  • Nā Hua‘ōlelo Hou (New Vocabulary)
  • Nā ‘Ōlelo No‘eau (Wise and Poetical Sayings)
  • Nā ‘Ōlelo Pōkole (Short Phrases/Sentences)
  • Nā Pilina‘ōlelo (Sentence Structure)
  • Ka Haʻi‘ōlelo (Informal and Formal Speech and Oratory)
  • Nā Mele/Oli/Pule (Song, Chant and Prayer)

Learning Standards and Expectations:

The eight grade students will participate and engage in communicative activities that are culturally healthy and appropriate.  Majority of activities and lessons will be conducted in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi to promote communication and understanding in the target language.

Grading Policies (weighted grading):

Graded will be done according to the Kula Waena Grading Policy (See Student Handbook and/or parent letters for modifications / clarification):

Formative Assessments: classwork, homework, short quizzes, small project, etc.

20%

Summative Assessments: Final projects, Unit tests

80%

Final grades are determined by the cumulative assessment of student work, student performance and student mastery of the target language at the first year level. Letters grades will be given using the following scale:

Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D D- F
Percentage 100-93% 92-90% 89-87% 86-83% 82-80% 79-77% 76-73% 72-70% 69-67% 66-63% 62-60% 59-0%

Since class work, homework, short quizzes, small projects, etc. is identified as practice assignments and not summative, it is weighted lightly and will not be a high portion of the students’ grade.  Students will expect to receive continuous feedback on mistakes on assignments.

KS Connect

KS Connect will be used as a tool for students and parents to follow academic progress throughout the year.  Student grades will be uploaded every day 1 (according to the KS Student and Parent Handbook).

Acronyms used for Hawaiian language classes include:

  • Mis = Missing assignment, incomplete, failed to turn in assignment
  • Abs = Student was absent when material was covered or student was absent when assignment was collected.
  • NC = no credit, this particular assignment is an enrichment assignment only and has no value towards students’ grade. Students are still required to turn in all assignments even though the enrichment assignments do not raise or lower the students’ grade in anyway.

Attendance and Make-up Work

It is the responsibility of each individual student to check with the Kumu about any missing assignments. All missing or incomplete assignments will be given a 0 if not completed and turned in according to the KS Connect upload schedule.

Classroom Discipline Rules/Guidelines:

Students are required to abide by the school-wide rules of conduct and appearance.  Any student violating those set rules will be reprimanded as stated in the student and parent handbook.

Students are expected to:

  • Participate in class activities, including daily chanting, discussions, individual and group assignments;
  • Show respect to their peers and their Kumu;
  • Use Hawaiian vocabulary and phrases learned in class; and
  • Come to class prepared
    • This includes having the appropriate supplies for class; pen, pencil, etc.
