Read Alouds

We have been learning to “E mālama iā ʻoe iho” (Take care of myself). In order to do this we need to know what it looks like in a classroom setting. We read Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen in class. Then we drew how we are like Howard B. Wigglebottom. Most of us drew when he listened to his mommy. A few other friends drew about when he was listening to the story the teacher read. Instead of just the story, we’ve also included a link to Howard B, Wigglebottom’s website to explore.

We have been studying about names and how important it is to everyone. We’ve read several books to learn about names. The first one we read was Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Her parents gave her a name that would match who she was to them. We also read a book about the Niu, the coconut. We learned through that story about the Niu, the plant our class is named for. Lastly we read Kohala Kuamoʻo – Naeʻole’s Race to Save a King. This story was written because of a school assignment by a boy at Kamehameha in the second grade. He tells the moʻolelo of how he got his name Kekauleleanaeʻole. We hope you enjoy listening to Kohala Kuamoʻo.

We have read several books in class during our first week of school. Here are two of the many we enjoyed. We hope you enjoy sharing the stories with your keiki as well.

This is one of my favorite children’s books, The Kiss that Missed.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn was the first story we read on the first day of Kindergarten. Its a story that helps all of us feel closer to our mommies and daddies even though we are not spending the day with them.
