Senior Seminar

SENIOR PAPA KĀKOʻO

 PURPOSE:     Senior Papa Kākoʻo helps students build a bridge between high school and their future. Seminar teachers and guidance counselors prep students for the SAT and/or other college entrance exams, assist with college admissions and financial aid applications, and focus students on important life skills and knowledge such as money management, rental agreements, and taxes. Students complete their Hōike Nui requirement, with their senior presentation. Christian Education has students explore personal theology, and Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu provides a capstone language and culture component to complete their Kamehameha schools experience.

CONTENT:  The class consists of 3 components:

  • Hoike Nui Prep, College Prep, Life Prep, and Counseling with Mr. Jay Paa, Mrs. Lisa Correa, Mr. Ladd Akeo and various other guest instructors.  (60%)

  • Papa Kalikiano (Christian Education) with Kahu Kalani Wong  (20%)

 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: 

 BEHAVIOR

  • Every student in this class is a senior.  The expectation is that everyone will behave as adults and thus will be treated in kind.
  • All school rules apply and will be enforced in class.
  • Laptops should only be used when assigned and for instructional purposes only.  Games or music are expressly prohibited.
  • Respect for the personal property of others and of the school is expected.

CLASSROOM ROUTINES

  • ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED.  You will receive full credit (points) for assignments that are completed on time.  You will not receive full credit (points) for assignments that are not completed on time. All assignments turned in late will be deducted 1 grade each class day it is late.
  • If you have an unexcused tardy or unexcused absence you will not be allowed to submit or receive work for that day.
  • In the case of excused tardies or absences it is your responsibility to secure and complete any missed assignments within 3 days of your return to school.  After three days, the score for any missed assignment, quiz or test will be a “mi.”
  • Participation in class is critical.  You will be expected to contribute your ideas, understandings, experiences and beliefs. You will be evaluated not on the quantity of what you say, but on the quality of your contribution to the class.
  • Points can be deducted for immaturity, off-task behavior, tardies, absences, time out of class, and other behaviors that detract from your own and others’ educational time.
  • Cheating, academic dishonesty in any form, and copying of homework, quizzes, or exams will not be tolerated.

GRADING POLICY:

Your final Papa Kākoʻo grade will be a weighted score based on the final scores of the 3 course components mentioned above.  60% of a student’s final grade will come from an average of Seminar and Guidance scores.  20% of a student’s final grade will come from Papa Kalikiano (Christian Education) assignments.  And finally, 20% of a student’s final grade will come from the completion of Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu assignments.  Every student will earn his /her grade according to the time and effort he/she invests in the course. All grading will be determined using a standard 100 point scale.

20%-  Papa Kalikiano (Christian Ed. Assignments)

20%-  Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu Assignments

100%-         Total
