Papa ‘Ekolu Candidates Rock!

Ho’omaika’i to all of the candidates that ran for Student Body Office for this school year! We are especially proud of our Papa ‘Ekolu students who campaigned and gave speeches in hopes of earning votes to become one of our student officers. You may not have won, but you are winners to us nonetheless. Great job, Kolt, Kaimana, Taliya, Damon and ‘Eleu! We hope you will consider running for office again in the future.

Our Shared Writing

In Papa ‘Ekolu, the expectation for students is to become strong, skilled writers who can write in different genres.  For the first trimester, students focus on narrative writing, which involves writing a true story from a small moment in their lives.

Below is a sample of a third grade writing that meets the grade level expectations for a narrative piece.  In the margins you will find comments that explain what the writer is able to do effectively.  Note that this piece is what students are striving to achieve by the end of third grade.

The next picture is of our first shared piece of writing that was done together.  First we selected a small moment from our first days together in Third Grade.  Then we told the story aloud from beginning to end.  Finally, we collaborated with each other on the words to write down on the paper.  Please understand this is a rough draft and the written work includes errors.  The next step in the process would be to conference about the piece and then make the revisions.

We hope you will enjoy reading this little snapshot of our small moment together!

Back-to-School

Aloha!

We are back to school at Kula Ha’aha’a and what a wonderful first day we had today.  Children were smiling ear to ear as they were reunited with their friends and met their new grade level teachers.  Teachers were just as happy to meet their brand new students for the 2016-2017 School Year.

On Friday, August 5th both Third Grade Classes will join together for some time time to reconnect and have some fun.  Yes, it’s pa’ina time!  ALL ‘ohana members are invited to join in on the festivities which will take place in Kina’u Pod from 1:15 p.m. -2:40 p.m.  We hope to see you there!
