Our Shared Writing

In Papa ‘Ekolu, the expectation for students is to become strong, skilled writers who can write in different genres.  For the first trimester, students focus on narrative writing, which involves writing a true story from a small moment in their lives.

Below is a sample of a third grade writing that meets the grade level expectations for a narrative piece.  In the margins you will find comments that explain what the writer is able to do effectively.  Note that this piece is what students are striving to achieve by the end of third grade.

The next picture is of our first shared piece of writing that was done together.  First we selected a small moment from our first days together in Third Grade.  Then we told the story aloud from beginning to end.  Finally, we collaborated with each other on the words to write down on the paper.  Please understand this is a rough draft and the written work includes errors.  The next step in the process would be to conference about the piece and then make the revisions.

We hope you will enjoy reading this little snapshot of our small moment together!
