First K-5 Ekalesia of 2017-2018 School Year

This past Wednesday we attended our first Kula Ha’aha’a Ekalesia as third graders. Kumu Shonnie shared with us our message for the year, which is, “E Kūpa’a No Nā Kau A Kau.” This means to stand firm in all seasons. She reminded us that no matter what we are going through or feeling, that Ke Akua provides us with the strength to stand strong. When our love and trust for Him is unconditional, we are able to thrive.

Author Visits Kula Ha’aha’a

Students were in for a treat today when a published children’s author visited our campus this morning. Author Anne Bustard, born in Hawai’i, is the author of non-fiction books for young readers.

Anne shared her writing process and journey in publishing Buddy: The Story of Buddy Holly.  Her inspiring story showed us first hand the importance of having a growth mindset- the belief in oneself to get smarter and through great effort getting stronger. Anne shared how many editors rejected her work, but she never gave up.  Her perseverance and faith in herself paid off as her book was finally published in 2005.

Mahalo, Anne, for sharing with us your trials and tribulations as a writer!  We enjoyed your visit today and hope you will come back to visit us again soon.

Partner Paper Clip Challenge

Last week was filled with lots of fun, pilina building, learning and what else? Challenges of course! Students of 3A participated in a Paper Clip Challenge. The task? Work with a friend to create a 10 piece paper clip chain. The challenge? Complete the task with one hand behind your back and NO talking with your partner! Everyone surprised themselves by not only accomplishing the task multiple times, but even sped up the amount of time they took to complete it.

Marshmallow Challenge

Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking! This challenge brought it all on!

3B haumāna practiced working together to achieve a common goal: to build the tallest freestanding structure possible using only spaghetti, string, tape, scissors and a marshmallow.

The first attempt was not a successful one for every group. But that didn’t stop these keiki from trying even harder. Given a second try, the haumāna were able to achieve their goal. Look what great minds can do!

Back-to-School!

Welcome back to school! We are off to a great start at kula ha’aha’a and especially in Papa ‘Ekolu. Last week Friday we had a Back-to-School Pā’ina for our ‘ohana, and boy did we have an awesome turn out. Kekūana’oa Pod was filled with excitement and laughter as friends, family and faculty got together to build pilina. Some chose to share their singing talents in the karaoke room and others relaxed in the bingo room. It was a great time to reconnect with each other and kick-off this new school year! Mahalo to all who were able to join us. No worries if you couldn’t make it… Open House is just around the corner! Hope to see you then!!!
