Mother’s Day Tea 2018

Our very own library was transformed into an elegant tea room to honor Papa ‘Ekolu’s mothers, grandmothers, principal and even a dad! Haumāna made us smile with their soft, angelic voices as they sang a few songs. Then we laughed and even shed a few tears when letters and poems about their mothers were read aloud. It was a heartwarming day filled with love between keiki and their ‘ohana. Here’s wishing Happy Mother’s Day to you all!

Ho’okipa for the 1976 Hōkūle’a Crew

How blessed and privileged are we?! We had the opportunity today to welcome the 1976 Hōkūle’a crew and listen to their mana’o about their experiences on and off of the wa’a. What a special treat for all of us here at Kamehameha Schools Hawai’i Campus. We hope our haūmana cherish this once in a lifetime visit.

A Visit with Hōkūle’a

We were blessed with the opportunity to visit Mama Hōkūle’a yesterday. Our haumāna and kumu learned from the 1976 crew about life on this vessel and the things they used to help them voyage the earth’s great oceans. What an amazing day we had honoring our Hawaiian culture and practices from long ago. Mahalo to all that made this huaka’i possible, especially Ke ‘Akua!

Aloha Pumehana- Beautiful Word

Aloha Mai Kakoū-
This month our Kula has been teaching the keiki about Aloha Pumehana, or empathy. By definition empathy means “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” As I contemplate how to teach my students to become empathetic I hear from a co-worker about a book titled “UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World.” I decided to order a copy and give it a shot. After reading just the first few pages I was hooked. I highly recommend this book to fellow educators and parents. Here is a snippet of the type of information you will find within this text.

“According to Borba, low levels of empathy are rampant in our culture, and in kids that’s associated with bullying, cheating, weak moral reasoning, and mental health issues, like anxiety and depression. Her book is a call to parents, teachers, and other caring adults to help encourage children to develop empathy and generosity toward others, and it’s full of research-based tips on how to do so.

Some tips are focused on increasing emotional literacy in general, by helping kids to better understand their own emotions and the emotions of others. Others involve helping kids to foster a sense of themselves as caring people, by engaging them in activities where they can be generous and by modeling generosity toward others ourselves. Still others involve helping kids to become moral heroes, in school and out of it.”

If you order the book and have any thoughts or questions or just have ideas about empathy and teaching children how to become empathetic individuals please let me know. I would love to talk story with you.

Mahalo Nui,
Miss Everett

Letter of Appreciation

It was a wonderful holiday season for Papa ‘Ekolu as they touched the lives of three families with their generous gifts from Target. A bike, playpen, toys, clothes and lots more- that’s what our haumana bought our new friends for Christmas!

Recently we received a touching letter of appreciation written by one of the eldest children in the family. They also sent in a framed picture of their hands and feet. It brought tears to our eyes to read their warm letter and to know that we were able to spread Christmas cheer to others.

Mahalo nui loa to all who contributed to this worthwhile service learning project.
