Absences from school should be avoided whenever possible unless attendance is prevented by an illness or emergency (see Student and Parent Handbook p. 18).
Excused absences include:
- Illness
- Emergency medical appointment
- Educational testing recommended by counselor/teacher
- Family crisis
- Court appearance
- Funeral
Unexcused Absences include:
- Missed bus, traffic, car trouble
- Overslept
- Family trips (for vacation, sports, performances)
- Mistaken “holiday/day off”
Our teachers work hard to develop and deliver quality curriculum and instruction. Formative and summative assessments are given often to measure the success of the lessons and each child’s skill level to determine future instruction. Illness and unforeseen emergencies do happen. We understand this. And teachers will provide make-up work for these instances. And we work closely with our Health Room personnel to monitor the health of our haumāna.
Teachers are not required, however, to provide make up work to those students who have unexcused absences. Please, e nā mākua, nā kūpuna, nā ʻohana, please plan your family vacations during our breaks (Fall, Christmas, Spring, Summer). We expect our teachers to do this and we ask this of you, too.
If you know your child is going to be absent, for whatever reason, please contact the school office at 982-0200 as soon as possible.
