Happy new year to each and everyone of you. We hope that your time spent together during the holidays has been enjoyable, filled with laughter, love and relaxation! While students are home enjoying the first few days of the new year, teachers are busy learning new and wonderful things and teaching other teachers! Monday was spent in our Nohona Hawai’i Day. This is one of our favorite in-service days as we get to learn more about our Hawaiian language, culture, and history. In the morning, we were enlightened by Mrs. Janet Zisk, archivist at KS Kapālama. We were amazed, over and over again, by things that she shared. The one word: Unbelievable.
Every teacher in our elementary school either presented or help to coordinate a presentation to middle and high school faculty members, based on pilina, or relationships. We even had t-shirts that said, “Got Pilina?” It was a great opportunity for us to share information with others and attend other workshops to broaden our understanding of Kamehameha Schools and its many programs.
The day ended with a fabulous video entitled, “One Voice”. It was about Kamehameha Schools Song Contest 2008. It was quite a moving production. If you ever have the chance to see it, please do so. You will not regret it.
Tomorrow we spend another day learning from one another and finding ways to improve our instruction and foster relationships in our classrooms and amongst one another. We can’t wait to see all the keiki on Wednesday.
