5G: Mixtures and Solutions

Earlier this month the fifth graders explored the differences between a mixture and a solution. Whatʻs the difference?  Can a mixture be a solution? Or can a solution be a mixture?

Well, a mixture is two items that mixed together but each item can be separated.  For example a bowl of oatmeal with fruits.  They are mixed together, but you can pull out the fruit from the oatmeal if you didnʻt like the fruit.

A solution is when two items are mixed together, but each item can NOT be seperated without special equipment.  For example, when you have a powered sports drink and you mix it with water.  The powder dissolved into the water, however you canʻt really get the powder back, right?  Unless you have special equipment.

SO….solutions are mixtures, but mixtures can not be solutions.
