2G: A Living Sponge

Why are the Hawaiian rainforests so important to us? Why should we protect them and keep them from being cut down?

As the second graders are learning about the plants and animals that make up the Hawaiian rainforests, they are also conducting experiments that help them understand the importance of these precious and unique areas.

In this two part experiment, the second graders are comparing what happens the rain when there is no rainforest and when there is rainforest.  In part one the students measured out 1/3 cup water and poured it onto the tray. This is symbolizing what would happen when there is no rainforest on the land.  Students then measured out the water in a cylinder and recorded their data.  Part two the students repeated the same procedures, but this time placing a sponge on the tray to symbolize the rainforest.

What were the results?  Many students quickly realized that there was less water to be measured in part two.  We are continuing to discuss in class why this is important.
