5G: Solar Boat Regatta 2012

This past weekend 21 fifth graders represented Kamehameha Schools Kula Ha`aha`a in the 5th Annual Solar Boat Regatta sponsored by HELCO held at Hilo Intermediate School. Here students from schools from around the Big Island competed in racing their solar boats.  It took about two hours to get all the boat raced. The top 10 in each racing category did a final race to determine the overall winners.  Congratulations to all the schools and students who participated in this wonderful event.

I especially want to congratulate our 21 students for a wonderful job representing our school.  Though the students were not successful in winning any individual awards, such as most creative, best engineering and design or best report, they did earn the Judge’s Choice Award for Community Contributor.  This award I feel embraces the true essence of this year’s fifth grade class.  Please watch the video as the organizer describes our students.

Also, check out a short video of the solar boat regatta. Mahalo nui to Mia’s mom, Carrie, for taking the group pictures throughout the regatta.  As well as all the many parents who came to support our students.  MAHALO!!
