2G: Fun with Magnets

“Look Mrs. Chang! I can make the paper clip move without touching it!”

“Magnets are cool!”

“I love this class! This is so much fun!”

These are some of the comments I’ve been hearing from my second graders as they explore and experiment with magnets. I love hearing this kind of comments and that is why exploring with magnets is one of my favorite activities to do with my second graders. They are given a whole bunch of items and a magnet wand to see which ones are attracted to the magnet wand. Soon enough they figure it out and the excitement begins. The students are very creative in trying to see what the magnets can do with various objects, even ones that aren’t attracted to the magnets.

Students are also learning through these experiences that magnets only attract or pull objects that have iron in them.  They are also exploring how objects that are attracted to magnets have to be in the magnet force field in order to be attracted. They created floating objects using this idea.

See them in action with magnets in this short video.  Enjoy!
