2G: Making A Difference

Aloha e 2nd Graders,

We’ve been looking at what makes up a tropical rainforest. You’ve learned that a typical rainforest has four layers: emergent at the top, then the canopy, followed by the understory and at the bottom the forest floor. However, did you know that the Hawaiian Islands is a rainforest? Right here where are school is located is a rainforest. Our rainforest are unique and special as it is home to many endemic and endangered species of plants and animals. We’ll be taking a closer look at some of the plants and animals that make up the Hawaiian rainforest.

Please view a short video on the importance of the Native Hawaiian Rainforests.

Question for you students: Why are the Hawaiian Rainforest important to protect?  What kind of plants and animals make up the Hawaiian Rainforest?  What is happening to the Hawaiian Rainforest?  What can you do to help protect them?

Cheers, Mrs. Chang
