This morning at `oli, we had our first drawing for the month of September. All students who were able to meet their ixl goal for the month of September had the opportunity to win a gift card along with their grade level classmates. Congratulations to the following students: Grade K: Seth M.S.; Grade 1: Serenity L.; and Grade 2: Tyler O. Mahalo to all the students who were able to meet their September goal! October is a new month, so comes another opportunity to earn a prize from the treasure box, and have your name entered for this month’s drawing for another Yogurtland card! So keep practicing!

Free Math Apps for iPads
Recently, The Teaching Children Mathematics provided a list of recommended math apps for ipads. Even better, these apps are FREE! They are:
- Zoom version 2.1 – this is a number line game with 24 different levels
- Slice It! version 1.3.0 – lots of area visualization, dividing shapes into a given number of equal parts (fractions)
- Rocket Math free version 1.8 – practice basic math facts, telling time, money, and identifying 3-D shapes.
- Coin Math free – learn about coins, counting in groups of five, ten, and twenty-five, shopping and making change
During our Monday inservice, Kumu DeSa shared with us the Rocket Math application for all of us to try. Kumu Crabbe and I had a great time working on our addition facts. The interesting thing is that as you build your skills, you are able to earn money that can be used later to build your own rocket and eventually launch it into space! Believe me, this is a winner! So much fun!
New IXL Math Incentive Program at our Kula
I recently shared information to our keiki about a new and exciting incentive program for ixl math. Here at Kula Ha`aha`a, students will be able to earn monthly prizes for themselves, as well as help their class earn a trimester award. Just remember that the monthly goal is to master seven skills at their grade level or within a grade level approved by their teacher. So please support your keiki as they use this useful tool to practice their math skills. If you have any questions or concerns about ixl or the particular skills that your child may be working on, please do not hesistate to contact your child’s teacher or myself. If you’d like more information about the incentive program, just click: IXL Math Schoolwide Incentive Program
Book of the Month: Who Sank the Boat?
This month’s book is entitled, Who Sank the Boat, by Pamela Allen. In this story a cow, a donkey, a sheep, a pig, and a tiny mouse decide to go for a ride in the bay. Oh my, the boat sinks! Do you know who caused the boat to sink? This is a funny story that helps young children learn about size and weight.
Book of the Month: One Bear at Bedtime
Welcome back to a new school year! Well, as I always say, “Better late than never!” And although it is nearly the end of August, here is my first book of the month entry for this new school year! I thought I would choose a book especially for our new haumana, the kindergarteners. One Bear at Bedtime, by Mick Inkpen, is a cute, feel good bedtime story. Here it introduces the numbers one through ten, as a little boy begins to describe all of the animals he needs to get ready for bed.
