Book of the Month: Math Curse

This month’s book is entitled, Math Curse by Jon Scieszka. This is fun story about a little girl who wakes up with a math curse upon her.  She goes through the day dealing with math problems all around her. This story teaches children how to recognize and solve math problems that occur in places and in situations we may have never thought of.  I remember receiving this book from a student over 15 years ago, and I still love this story til today.

Click on this site, http://www.santa-t.com/northpole_weather.html to find out what the temperature at the North Pole happens to be.  What does it mean to be in the negative degrees?  What is the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit?  How much warmer are we here in Hawaii as compared to the North Pole?  Lots of questions to investigate further in regards to temperature.  See if you can keep track of the temperatures at the North Pole by creating a line graph.  Do you think the temperature will rise or fall?  Have fun with this data and get back to me on what you find out. Book of the Month: Pigs on the Move: Fun with Math and Travel

This month was difficult to choose just one book to showcase, but I decided to share with you a story called, Pigs on the Move Fun with Math and Travel, by Amy Axelrod. The Pigs are excited to be traveling on Christmas Eve to Beantown. Unfortunately they end up missing their flight. Saddened to be stuck at an airport on Christmas Eve, Father Pig saves Christmas and finds another plane that is able to get the family to Beantown, but they must make many stops along the way. All ends well, and the family learns a valuable lesson this holiday season. Enjoy this story full of holiday spirit and learn more about how measurement skills such as time and distance are used. See if you can answer the questions at the end of story. Have a blessed and merry holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving!

As we begin to enter the holiday season, know that you can always find fast and easy ways to integrate math.  For example, this site: http://grandmaskite.com/d2dscarecrow.html is an animated dot-to-dot activity that can have our K-1 keiki practicing their counting skills up to 48. You can also check out:  http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/thanksgiving.html for ideas and worksheets.  As you can see by the address this is a site that teachers can use, but as a parent, it is a great resource for you as well.
