Using their understanding of “structures”, students are now ready to see a purpose, or “function” of structures. 

Writing Standard 8 (Gr.3): Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.    

Students use the brace map for envisioning “structures” and collect words and phrases (details and super details) for describing them.  This process helps them attach meaning to the actual word when it is formally introduced.
