Makawalu 2017!!! April 19 and 20

Makawalu 2017
“Oceans Apart…..Facing Change”

Makawalu serves as our 5th Grade Capstone Project, which is an end of the year culmination and celebration of learning!  Makawalu mean 8 eyes.  This refers to the act of looking at ideas and things from multiple lenses, perspectives or points of view.

Everyone was invited into our “History Museum Come Alive”.  Here they entered a magical dimension as they traveled back in time several hundreds of years to the lifetime of King Kamehameha the Great!   Here all were able to see and understand 2 important worlds, that although Oceans Apart, were both FACING a number of similar CHANGES.

After 2 months of deep research, writing, planning and preparing, Papa ʻElimaʻs presentations captured parallels between Hawaiʻi and Colonial America during Kamehameha the Greats timeline (1750-1820).  Although worlds and cultures apart, there are many UNIVERSAL THEMES that we share and have in common.

1.  Interdependence with the land and natural resources…..KUKAUKAʻI
2.  Our need to communicate and express ourselves…..KAKAʻOLELO
3.  Our innovation and creativity…..KUPONOHANAʻIKE
4.  Our ability to adapt to and grow from CHANGE…..HULIAU a me HOʻOLOLI
