About Me

Aloha!

My name is Carmen Matsuura and I would like to welcome you to my blog.

This is the beginning of my eleventh year at Kamehameha Schools Maui.  I have had nine great years here as a fifth grade teacher and am now teaching second grade. I enjoy working with students of all ages.  Prior to KSM, I taught kindergarten for half a year and third grade for nine years at Kamali’i Elementary in Kihei.

Spending time with my family is very important to me.  My husband loves to be in or near the ocean and every now and then I will check behind his ears for gills. My daughter (KSM ’08 grad IMUA!) is on her own and we are now empty nesters again. We enjoy going to the movies, fishing, camping, traveling and just relaxing with each other.  Our dog, “Cuddles” just passed away this past summer.  We had her for nineteen years and miss her terribly.  Now it’s just the two of us and our turtle, Spaz.

I like to hike, shop, chat, travel and do crafts with friends.  I am a lifelong learner; always taking some kind of class to make me a better person.  I find that putting myself in the role of a student helps me to understand my students better and therefore hopefully become a stronger teacher.

Mahalo for stopping by!

Quotes that guide me:

“If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.” Amen to that!!!   Author?

“You may not think you can reach it.  Climb anyway.        You may not think you’ll be heard.  Speak anyway.        You may not think you can change things.  Try anyway.” Inspired by Maya Angelou

“A (a better grade, higher degree, better job) would be nice.” My dad after each of my achievements.     He is the one who taught me how to “fly”; achieve a goal, set a new goal.  I know he’s up in heaven with my mom watching over me.  I love you mom and dad!!!
