Papa ‘Ekahi are having fun learning about idioms while reading the Amelia Bedelia Series written by Peggy Parish. Idioms are words or phrase used in a way that is different from its usual or dictionary meaning. Amelia Bedelia is a charming housekeeper that never gets anything right. Although she has some misunderstandings like “please dress the chicken” and “draw the drapes,” she will always make up for it with her baking!
Nonfiction Collection
Up to this point, our kindergarteners have been reading and borrowing books from the fiction (easy) collection. Today, we read the book titled A tree is a plant written by Clyde Robert Bulla. Together we discussed the different features nonfiction books can have (table of contents, labels, photographs, etc.) and when reading nonfiction books we can learn new information.
Illustrators & Friendship Salad
What is the job of an illustrator? “Someone who draws the picture!” says Ethan. “You’re absolutely correct!” says Kumu Kanani. Papa Mālaa’o have been learning about the parts of the book (title, author, illustrator). And alongside this learning, they been learning some important concepts like: The life cycle of a butterfly, Recycling, and Friendship. To end our unit, we made a friendship salad using yummy ingredients like fruit cocktail that represented friends who visit the library, and marshmallows which represented “kind words” that we use when speaking to our friends. Our Friendship Salad reminded us about how we need to treat one another; using kind words and ALWAYS being NICE!
