Tues., 4/7 – We will go over the rubric for the Power of One project so you know what is expected from the beginning & continue research for this project.  Introduce PSA project that will be due the end of class on Thurs.  This PSA should be a 30sec. – 2min long video to make sure everyone knows what your question is and what your challenge is.  You are trying to get people emotionally connected so they get behind your project.  Use text, stills, video, music.  Lastly, you will complete a short voc. questionnaire.

Tues. 1/20 – Mealworm experiment – Putting all the information you learned about controls and variables to the test!  Each student will observe mealworms in class and then complete a lab write up in their notebook by Fri. & work on concentration skills – a drama grade will be given on Fri. for the work students have completed on cooperation & concentration.
HMWK – Complete the WHOLE first page of the lab write-up.  Three hypothesis should be written in “IF….THEN…” format.
Wed. 1/21 – Watch a video on Control & Variables & continue on mealworm experiment  – select hypothesis to test and identify the control and variable in your experiment.  Drama – work on concentration – Level 4

Excellent first week back to school 🙂  We are getting into the swing of things & our notebooks are off to a great start.  This week we do have Christian Ed./Guidance which means that some days students don’t have that block of time to work on homework so they will need to get that done at home.  Groups A & B go on Tues./Wed. and groups C & D go on Thurs./Fri.  Please continue to encourage your child to complete their Reading Plus sessions – Mrs. Nishimitsu has a new challenge going.  Plus, it will give you practice reading and help you be a super reader!  This is what’s happening this week:

Happy New Year!!  I hope you are as excited as I am for a fresh start.  We will be using something new in class this semester called an Interactive Science Notebook (ISN).  This notebook will help you make connections to the content you are learning in life science.  It is important that you keep it up-to-date & organized!

*If your child has turned in a permission form to march in the parade tomorrow after our field trip, please read below:
*We will be marching from UH-MC to the Stadium.  Students will stay with me at the MACC after the field trip.
*A snack of pizza & water will be provided around 2:30.
*Please have students pack a disposable lunch & water – whatever they bring, they have to carry!!  Pack light it’s a walk!
*Pick up will be at the stadium.  Fish will be left with me at the van after the march.
*If you are lost and cannot find your child, please call me – 264-1142.
*If your child has a phone, they may want to bring their charger to the field trip to make sure they are powered up before walking – we don’t want to have communication breakdowns.

Back to School Update…some of you are writing & calling to see if you can drive your child…this is difficult at this point because there is paperwork that needs to be filled out and trying to keep track of who is going on their own at this late date is just hard.  Also, we are worried about the parking situation once we get there.  IF AT ALL POSSIBLE PLEASE COME ON THE BUS WITH YOUR CHILD AT THE SCHOOL.  Thank you so much – I know this is hard & possibly inconvenient but it is best for OUR GROUP as a whole so if at all possible please help us with this.  Please come to school by 7:45 and if you’d like to enjoy some refreshments plan to be here by 7:30.  Parking at school may be crowded as well and you may need to park in HS if you come later than 7:30. We are meeting at 9:00 at the Whale Sanctuary at Kōʻieʻie in Kihei.  Please bring a lunch and water for you & your child as well as a change of clothes if you plan to get wet.  Students may wear slippers and please bring tobis if you have.   We plan to be back at school around 2:00 at which time you may take your child home with you.   Thank you very much, Mrs. Kapisi

Aug. 27th – Students have been busy with group projects.  They were grouped according to the topic they were interested in.  They started their research and are now working on coming up with their hypothesis.  As a group they are thinking of ways to make a positive change in their community on an issue that interests them.  They will collect data in the field or through research that shows that they have identified a problem and then brainstorm solutions and put one to the test.  This is NOT an easy task but one that can be very rewarding…I am excited to see what they come up with.

Monday – Friday students will be working on a research project in groups.  It is critical that they use their time wisely and get majority of it done in class.  They will be researching one of the following phylums:  Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and Chordata.  Students will be given a sheet to guide their research.  Also, they will need to decide as a group how they are going to present to the class. Some possible idease are computer power point presentation, poster presentation, models, handouts, demonstrations, living organisms, slides, skeletons…be creative.  Questions that they need to answer in their presentation include the following:

*In addition, at MINIMUM, your presentation should share the following information:

How do your organisms:

1. Get food?  Where do they fit into the food chain?

2. Escape predation or protect themselves?

3.  Move around (if they move?)

4. Find mates and reproduce?  BE MATURE as you research this!!!

5. Deal with harsh environments or environmental changes?

What are their shared and unique features that cause scientists to group them together?

Think about Natural Selection and how it may have acted upon them.  How are they adapted to be successful and survive and reproduce?

Do they have any unique or unusual traits or behaviors?

How do they interact with humans?

*Are they important to humans as a food or other resource?

*Do humans have any other kinds of impacts on them?

Mon. (1/17) NO SCHOOL

Tues. (1/18) Students will review their research and together as a class we will come up with some generalizations of countries in central Asia. We will aslo complete a READING PLUS session.  Students are given time througout the week to complete all 4 sessions in school.  They should be completing one in Science, 1 in English, and 2 in IMUA. 

Wed. (1/18) & Thurs.(1/19) The students will be brainstorming environmental concerns from their country and listing the problems & solutions.  They will then select one problem/solution to present to the class.  They will use their creativity in designing a way to share their information.  They will also be researching current enviornmental issues.

Fri.(1/13)  Students will share their projects with the whole class.   

 

 

WELCOME to a NEW Semester 🙂 

This week I will be getting to know this new bunch of students.  We will be working on rules & routines to set us up for a wonderful semester of learning.  By Friday of each week, I will post what is coming up for the following week so the students can plan accordingly. 

This week is a Guidance & Christian Education week which means that the students will NOT have their IMUA class for 2 of the 5 days.  Monday is a regular day with IMUA. 

MON. –  We will be working on an introduction to TRIBES, an explanation of the “Do It Now” which is done daily upon entering class & an I will give them an introduction to the TRIBES agreements we will follow in class.  If time permits, we will practice using the balance to measure items and then record  the information on a CGS Challenge sheet (used to practice metric measurements).

THURS.  – Students will be working in groups to plan and present a commercial on one of the TRIBES agreements.  They will only have 15 min. to get this together – THINK ON YOUR TOES!!  If time permits, multiple intelligence packet.

FRI. – Teams of students will get a bag of legos in which they will create a design using all the pieces.  They will then trade bags and see how well they wrote their directions.
