Last week in review: UH student athlete panel discussion and weekend activities

This is it! Less than two weeks of school remain — but the boys of Nae’ole Hale are still working hard in school and enjoying their free time on the weekends.

On Tuesday, May 5, boarders and day students were treated to a special panel discussion featuring UH student athletes at Kalama Dining Hall from 7 to 8 p.m. Dyrbe Enos (2012 graduate of Kamehameha Kapalama and current men’s basketball player), Tiana Fujimoto (women’s soccer), Hi’ilawe Huddleston (sand volleyball), Destiny King (women’s basketball), and Kory Rasmussen (2012 graduate of Kamehameha Kapalama and current football player) graciously shared their time with the middle school students, as current HPD officer and men’s basketball commentator Kawika Hallums moderated the event. Below, a picture of the event along with an accompanying Powerpoint.

Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10

Saturday started bright and early as the boys prepared for a day of community service on the North Shore. After 7:45 a.m. breakfast at Akahi, we made the long trek to Hale’iwa to malama the Loko Ea fishpond. The boys enjoyed this rare cultural site and worked hard to help preserve it. This area is traditionally known for its profusion of fresh water springs.

After a morning of hard work in the sun, the boarders were treated to lunch and a day at the beach. By 3:30 p.m., it was time to go home and few boys made it through the trek from Hale’iwa to Kapalama without taking a snooze. We took Saturday evening easy — as we watched the State baseball playoffs and a busload of boys spent an hour at KamShop.

Sunday gave way to its normal routine; chapel in the morning, then brunch, KamShop around lunchtime, Keawe in the afternoon, dinner around 5, and study hall and dorm cleaning. All in all, it was a great weekend. Only one weekend left!

Weekend activities: Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26

It was another busy weekend at Nae’ole Hale. Friday began with “Keawe/DVD,” as most boys elected to go to Keawe Gym to be physically active.

Saturday was a mellow day in the dorms — many boys checked out with family members who were on island to watch the Spring performance. The performance commenced Saturday evening in Kalama and received rave reviews by all who attended. For Saturday evening’s activity, the boys were treated to “Keawe Big Screen” — as “Maze Runner” played on the gym’s silver screen.

Sunday started with chapel, and an optional mall outing to Ala Moana followed at 11 a.m. The bus returned about 3 p.m. and Keawe was again opened for activity. The evening wound down with study hall and dorm jobs. All in all, it was another great weekend. Only a few more to go!

Weekend activities (April 18 and 19): Spring Social and Sunday Fun

It was a busy weekend for the gentlemen of Nae’ole Hale. Saturday marked the beginning of breakfast in the dorm — instead of bussing up to Akahi, the boys ate rice, eggs, and sausage in the hale dining room while some enjoyed sleeping in a few more hours. After a 9:30 a.m. dorm meeting, routine study hall and room cleaning, Spring Social kicked off during the afternoon hours. The event — coordinated by Kaha’opulani Dorm Advisor Lindy Maluo — was a success, with teachers, day students, boarders, and families alike taking in a fun-filled day on the Inter-Field. Ms. Maluo planned a series of fun games including volleyball, kickball, and relay races. There was also a slip-in-slide that provided a respite from the heat and seemingly endless hours of fun. Ample food was on hand … no one left hungry! The grill provided hotdogs, hamburgers and even steak! By the time the evening rolled around, everyone was wiped out. Needless to say, the hale was quieter than normal for a Saturday night. A huge “mahalo” to Ms. Maluo for her efforts!

Sunday brought with it chapel, brunch, and runs to Kamehameha Shopping Center. About 16 boys took advantage of the outing and stocked up on food, groceries, and other supplies. In the afternoon, about 12 boys played basketball at Keawe and “Ala Gym” opened for business about 4 p.m. It was nice to have some down time, and the perfect way to wind down after a busy weekend!

Weekend activities: Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12

The first weekend of the fourth quarter got off to a good start, with the right combination of rest, relaxation — and fun and games. With Friday night came “Keawe/DVD” and most boys opted to spend their evening in the gym at Keawe, while those electing to stay in Nae’ole for “DVD” were treated to the Merrie Monarch Festival on television. Keawe/DVD went so well Friday night, an encore performance was scheduled for Saturday night! Again, most boys attended Keawe as the conclusion of Merrie Monarch played back at the hale.

Sunday brought with it chapel and Kahu had prepared a wonderful service for the all who attended. The service culminated with the release of a gaggle of rainbow doves, symbolic of the promise God made that he will never flood the Earth — or bring suffering to His people. After chapel came brunch, and after brunch, runs to KamShop. Around 3 p.m., the boys and girls converged on Keawe to participate in a double-hui. Planned for the group was “Kings and Queens,” a version of half-court basketball. There were eight teams total and the young men and women enjoyed competing against one another in a fun and safe environment:

Up next: The home stretch!

The gentlemen of Nae’ole returned to their hale away from hale on Monday, ready to embark on the final quarter of the 2015-2016 school year. As always, the young men were excited to see one another and greeted each other with customary revelry.

By 9 p.m., however, the boys were ready for lights out. The buzz that had defined the early evening had given way to fatigue and the boys needed their rest. Tuesday, after all, would mark the first day of the rest of this school year.

Weekend recap: Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1

February seemed to fly by! The gentlemen of Nae’ole Hale capped off the shortest month by attending Ho’olaule’a on Saturday. The festival — well known for its food, spirited vendors, performances, music, and even rides — took place at Konia Field. Ho’olaule’a concluded about 4 p.m. In the evening, about 10 boys and 10 girls enjoyed a trip to Ward Theatre to take in a movie. The majority of students watched “The Duff,” while a handful watched “Jupiter Ascending.”

By Sunday, the boys were ready for a break. But first, they were treated to a special chapel service at Konia Field conducted by Young Life. The Nae’ole boys enjoyed participating in the fun activities Young Life had in store, and listened intently to the message that was shared. It was a special way to conclude the Ho’olaule’a festivities, and meaningful to have two important community events at Konia Field on back-to-back days.

After chapel came brunch and by the time we returned to the dorm, many of the young men were ready for some down time. In the afternoon, Mr. Bross opened Keawe Gym for free play. After Keawe closed, it was time for Ala Gym to open. Mr. Ala and a group of hardworking boys were able to get in a good workout before dinner at 5 p.m.

Nae’ole roundup: wehena and panina, Chinese New Year dinner, and double-hui

It’s a busy stretch for the gentlemen of Nae’ole Hale. Upon their return from Common Weekend, the young men (and young women of Kaha’opulani!) participated in wehena and panina on Tuesday, Feb. 17. On Feb. 19, both boys and girls were treated to a special Chinese New Year’s Dinner and had the opportunity to participate in an assortment of cultural activities. And, finally, both Nae’ole and Kaha’opulani Hale combined forces for a double hui on Sunday, Feb. 22. Pictures, below:

And finally … double hui! It was all fun and games on Sunday, and the boys and girls enjoyed soaking up the rays while competing with one another.
