Mālama Maunalua FT

On February 7,2018, Pū’ulu Koa visited and worked in Maunalua Bay.  There we learned from Aunty Pua about the Ko’olau Mountain Watershed Partnership, we learned from Uncle Jason about the significance in caring for our water systems (streams, estuary (muliwai) and ocean), we were able to work alongside Aunty Maci, Aunty Kiana and Uncle Pono and the rest of the huki team to pull 59 bags of invasive limu that totaled 1180 pounds.  It was a beautiful and productive day learning and working together.  Mahalo to all who made this event possible.
Students, please reply to this blog with your reflection from this experience.

Below is an email message from Aunty Maci and the Mālama Maunalua group:

Hi everyone,

I hope you are well. We greatly appreciated your participation in our educational huki yesterday. It was a beautiful day in the water and weʻre so glad that your students were able to join from Kamehameha School. Collectively, you successfully pulled 59 bags which equals 1180 lbs of invasive limu from Maunalua Bay. All the limu was donated to a local, organic farm. Fantastic work!!

If you have a few minutes, kindly share our huki survey link with your participants. We continue to seek way to improve our educational huki events.

Huki Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WKXCG5Z

Thank you again for coming out and we all really appreciated the snacks! Please join us in the future!

Best,
Maci and the huki team

The Amazing Zine!

On Monday, November 20th, 2017 our students had the opportunity to speak directly with media professionals from FLUX Magazine Hawaii.  Students were able to discuss the creative process of making magazines with a specific theme. Zines are a creative way to express oneself, self-publish, and let your voice be heard. We give a special mahalo to Lisa  (Founder of FLUX), Ara (Creative Director) and Matt (Editor & KS graduate) for taking time out to inform and inspire our haumāna!

The Marvel of Making Graphic Novels

On Thursday, November 16th, 2017 7th grade classes were introduced to Aaron Kuder, illustrator for Marvel Comics.  This session was designed around understanding the creative process for student authors and artists creating graphic narratives.  Students were able to see the creative process from early concept sketches to the final end product that is then published and consumer ready.  Narrative story telling through images and the graphic novelʻs importance in past and present society was discussed.  Aaron shared his experiences as a young aspiring, and now professional artist.  Aaron has helped to produce several well known comics such as Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, Spider-Man, and Superman. Mahalo for taking the time to share with our kids. Students take a moment to share what you learned and enjoyed about last Thursday.

He Hawai’i Au – Kumu Kawika Eyre and Uncle Brook Parker

On Monday, October 30, 2017, the 7th grade classes were able to learn from Kumu Kawika and Uncle Brook.  They are the author and artist of the book: Kamehameha in addition to their other work in their repertoire.  The mana’o and mo’olelo they shared today awakens in each of us a challenge to be proud of who we are as Hawaiians and to remember those that came before us so that those who come after us will continue to carry on our rich history, language and culture.  Mahalo for coming to be with us today!  Students, please take time to add your comments about what you learned, liked and connected with as you listened to our speakers today.  What can you do to carry on the legacy that our chiefs and relatives of long ago valued.
