Busy Programming their EV3 robots

Girls are excellent programmers!!!!

Every year, FIRST LEGO League releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each Challenge has three parts: The Robot Game, the Project, and the Core Values. A team of up to ten children participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (RobotCHALLENGE®Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the FIRST LEGO League Core Values.

Practicing their Team Building skills!

This yearʻs theme is Hydro Dynamics. This year’s Project challenge is to improve the way people find, transport, use, or dispose of water. By designing Challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen Challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles that naturally come from participating in the program. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose. Students from all across the nation are participating in these challenges. The official challenge was released on August 30th through the First LEGO League (FLL). The competition will be held on November 11, 2017 at the Kamehameha High School Campus.

We wish our FIRST LEGO League best of luck!

Another Great Sustainable App!

Enjoying your Summer?  Our haumana in Kumu Kaiaokamalie’s SustainAppbility Summer Course Session 2 class have been busy creating Apps that will help our ‘Åina. Haumana have created Apps that will help detect pesky insects (Hawaii’s Curious Creatures), learn how to care for a plant in a digital virtual reality environment, or even learn which Native Species are best for food consumption. Jason Patao and his partner Shacedy Dudoit-Higa have brainstormed an App called Ulu that will help populate more native plants on Maui. Please click on the link below to see a demo app of their Ulu App. Be sure your volume is turned up!

The students designed the App to better inform people about taking better care of Maui’s environment with an emphasis on sustainability. Lights…Camera…ACTION!

Our Wake Up Warriors Broadcast team members enjoyed a day of learning and fun!  They went on a huakaʻi to visit the University of Hawaii Maui Campus. Mr. Mike Albert, Class of ʻ72 took them on a tour of the Kaʻa ʻIke Building, Media Center. The students were treated to a behind the scenes tour of the facility as well as a hands-on demonstration of their state of the art media studio. Students practiced running the 3 cameras, using the various sound, light and transition boards as well as shooting from two established sets. We are very grateful to our host, Mr. Albert who took time out of his busy day to give us the tour and have some hands-on studio time. He lit a spark and we are hoping next yearʻs morning broadcast will be even better.
