What is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM)?

Music In Our Schools Month is an annual celebration during March which engages music educators, students, and communities from around the country in promoting the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools.

Music In Our Schools Month began as a single statewide Advocacy Day and celebration in New York in 1973 and grew over the decades to become a month-long celebration of school music in 1985.

There are many ways to celebrate the month, why not sing a song with your child? Maybe teach them one you enjoyed as a keiki. Trust me, your child will NOT care if you don’t sound like an “American Idol”. You are the most important person in your child’s life and a music interaction with them will be a cherished memory for them. Have fun please share a comment with me after you have sung with your child, I’d love to hear about it!

Did you know Miss Galang was a musician???

FotorCreatedOur wonderfully talented technology teacher is also a very talented musician. She grew up playing in her school band and still plays today. She was nice enough to bring her instruments into school so that our 1st graders could learn about the clarinet and alto saxophone. As an added treat we also watched a video of Miss Galang marching in her college band at a halftime football game.  Playing and singing in a musical organization can be life long endeavor. Thank you Miss Galang!!!

Did you also know that musicians can also go to other countries and join a musical group without speaking a foreign language. MUSIC IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE! Everyone in every country reads the same notes the same way. It is truly and international language!

OH , NO The instruments keep getting bigger and BIGGER!!!!

Well we have hit the Grand Daddy of the violin family, known as the String Bass, Bass Viol, or just the Bass!. It’s bigger than all of us and as you can see the keiki had to stand on a chair to even play it. But it was good fun and we can now say we have worked our way through the string section of the orchestra. Just ask them. Violin, viola, cello and bass. Yay us!!Fotor01015103845

……and now we love the cello too!!!

Last week the first graders all thought they might all grow up to be violin virtuosi, and now they aren’t so sure, there are so many choices!! Auntie Kaori Mahelona brought her beautiful cello to music class today and not only played for the keiki, but let them play as well. The looks on their faces say it all, sheer concentration and delight!
