Have you ever written a poem with someone 4,772 miles away? Well, our fifth graders have! Today the students in 5b participated in the culminating experience of a collaborative poetry project with their Baltimore buddies.
We began the projects a few weeks ago with a Skype session in which Mrs. Falatko, the fifth grade teacher in Baltimore, talked to both classes about poetry for two voices. You can see my blog posting on that skype session by clicking here!
The fifth graders then used Edmodo and Voicethread, two Web 2.0 tools, to collaborate in the practicing and writing of poems for two voices. The students worked with a partner, one student from Baltimore and one from Hawai’i, to create their own poem for two voices.
The positive communication that took place during the writing of the poems was amazing! They were very excited to be speaking their poems aloud with each other during their small group Skype sessions.
And guess what! There was a local news crew filming in Baltimore. We made the news! Check out the video of the news segment, and below that check out some pics and video clips of our Skype.

I think that it was nice that we got to share our poems with the Baltimore students because we got to cooperate well with them and share our wonderful poems for two. I also thought that it was awesome that we got to be on the news.
That was awesome I did not know we would be on the news. that was so awesome I hope we do it again some day. It was awesome we’re famous. Just joking, ha ha ha.
We are on tv. Suprisingly, the only part that excites me is the Baltimore part. I am on TV sometimes and was before. I hope that we can go world-wide next. The skype was good and I can’t wait for our next skype.
OMG!!!! I was on the Baltimore news! I wish I could be on TV all the time like Justin Bieber. I love skyping with Baltimore,Maryland because it was something new that I ever did in my life. It’s kind of like video calling. I loved doing the project on our poem and I wish we could do more like something more about us. Maybe our next project we can take things a little further and video record our families instead of just showing our Baltimore friends an “All About Me” page.

It is so cool that we got on tv for skyping with Maryland and doing a cool project where we make poems. My poem was about video games. I liked how we all were on the news also, no one was left out.
It was really fun and exiting to write the poems with our Friends in Maryland. It was so fun. First we got the topic. Me and Lukas chose to do the sky. I liked doing that I think we should do more things like that.
I enjoyed skyping! I had a lot of fun with our buddies. I think skype and edmodo are good web tools. I also enjoyed writing poems for two voices. I want to do this more often.
I think that making the news in another state is super cool! Doing another project would be so much fun! We would get to have new partners and make new, lasting memories.
YES! We are on TV. I always wanted to be on TV. We are now famous in another state. Great Job team! Thank you very much Mrs. Stack for all that you do for us and if it was not for you we would not be doing any of this. You are an amazing teacher. Thank you very much for giving us an awesome experience. And to the Buddies in Baltimore you guys rule and you guys are great buddies.
WOW! I can’t believe that we were on the news. I loved skyping and working with my Baltimore friends and buddies. I had so much fun learning new information about Baltimore. The poems were awesome! My partner was super! I just loved it! Thank you Mrs.Stack and Baltimore friends.

It was exciting to Skype with our Baltimore buddies and to be able to be on the news in Baltimore. During this project I learned how to use technology to collaborate with someone far away! I also got to meet new friends in a whole new state!
