Developed in conjunction with DECA, this one-of-a-kind text presents the planning needed to develop and start a school store, as well as the business functions involved in its successful operation. Career preparation is infused throughout the text, as students learn the skills and attitudes required in any job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Learning Outcomes: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>At the end of this course the student will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the channel of distribution in the retail outlet.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the techniques, strategies and systems used to foster self-understanding and enhance relationships with others.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the tools, strategies and systems used to maintain, monitor, control and plan the use of financial resources.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the processes and systems implemented to monitor, plan, and control the day to day activities required for continued business functioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Major texts, literature, or resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>School Store Operations<\/em> by\u00a0 DECA, INC., South-Western, 2005.<\/p>\n<p>One of the following novels to be used:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Money Dragon<\/em>, Pam Chun, Sourcebooks, inc, 2002.<\/p>\n<p><em>Managing with Aloha<\/em>, Rosa Say, Ho\u2019ohana Publishing, 2004.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Last Lecture<\/em>, Randy Pausch, Hyperion Books, 2008.<\/p>\n<p><em>Entrepreneurship; Ideas in Action<\/em>, ed. 2, South-Western, 2001<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course outline<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Research Your Market<\/li>\n<li>Develop a Plan<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Make It Operational<\/li>\n<li>Run the Store<\/li>\n<li>Account for Profits<\/li>\n<li>Promote Your Business<\/li>\n<li>Secure Your Store<\/li>\n<li>Have a Customer Focus<\/li>\n<li>Be an Effective Manager<\/li>\n<li>Achieve Personal Success<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Grading:\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grading is done on a point system.\u00a0 Assignments will be given varying points determined by the teacher.\u00a0 Late work is worth half the points earned for that assignment if turned in by the next class period.\u00a0 Missing work after that time is worth zero points, but will have to be done.\u00a0 To determine the student\u2019s quarter grade the total points the student has earned is divided by the total points that are assigned by the teacher.\u00a0 Semester grades are the average of the two previous quarters, with the final project or test in the quarter grade.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum calls for the student to be self motivated as much of the work once assigned is up to the student to make sure they complete and turn in by the due date.\u00a0\u00a0 Grading will also include working after school at Ke Ku&#8217;ono.\u00a0 A rubric and a self evaluation is part of the participation grade. (Initials _______________)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attendance, participation, and work make-up policy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Late work:\u00a0 <\/strong>The assignment is considered late if it is not in the teacher\u2019s hands or in the homework box at the beginning of the block.\u00a0 The late work will be graded and half the points earned on the assignment will go into the grade book if turned in by the beginning of the next class period.\u00a0 After that, it will earn no credit and the student will be required to complete the assignment; either in after school, Ka Pa or on a Saturday make-up day.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Absent work<\/strong>:\u00a0 It is the responsibility of the student to get their makeup work from the teacher when they return to school from an excused absence.\u00a0 Students will be allowed two school days to turn work in for full credit, after that it will be late. If the absence is unexcused there will be no points given.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student responsibilities:\u00a0 <\/strong>This class is an upper level class that will require the student to work in the store after school.\u00a0 They are trained to be the managers of the store supervising the students working.\u00a0 They will rotate so that they are working at least 3 to 4 times or maybe more per month depending on coverage in the store.\u00a0 The store is open from 2:30 to 3:30pm Monday-Friday.\u00a0 The student manager is responsible for the opening, operating and closing of the store when on duty so they may finish their shift after 3:30pm.\u00a0 This is a requirement that must be met in order to take this class.\u00a0 In addition to their work to operate the store there is curriculum that the student is assigned and reading of 1 or 2 novels that relate to the class.\u00a0 There is much responsibility and a high level of integrity and maturity is expected. (Initials required ______________________________)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expected classroom behaviors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Student will behave in a manner that creates an environment that is conducive to learning.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>RESPECT &#8211; Be on time.<\/li>\n<li>RESPECT &#8211; Treat others the way you want to be treated.<\/li>\n<li>RESPECT &#8211; Have all materials needed for class.<\/li>\n<li>RESPECT &#8211; Positive attitude allow for learning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Other information:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Computer use during class:\u00a0 <\/strong>Computer use will be determined by the teacher depending on the lesson being taught.\u00a0 Use of computer for activities other than for class; student will be given an hour detention &amp;\/or have their laptop taken away for a week.\u00a0 If the behavior becomes chronic; then the student may lose the use of the computer. Without it they will not be able to complete their work in class and must complete work at home or in the Charles Reed Bishop Learning Center on their own time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working in the store:<\/strong>\u00a0 as mentioned above working in the store after school is mandatory in this class.\u00a0 Students are required to be available from 2:30-3:45.\u00a0 If this cannot be achieved because of an after school job, sports or other activities; they will have to leave the class and register for another class.\u00a0 This is not a required class for their academy and there are other business classes that they can attend that have no after school requirements.
