Nā Koa Reward Card Program

We are about to kick-off our Na Koa Reward Card program. A letter is being sent home to acquaint our new families to the program and explain the changes to our returning families. The Nä Koa Reward Card Program is a school-wide effort to reinforce student behavior expectations based on the 3 values of Hö `ihi (respectful), Kuleana (responsible) and Palekana (safe). This year, the reward card program is focusing on being respectful, in an effort to build pilina (relationships) among students. Therefore, the grade level expectation of past years will now be replaced by having students demonstrate respectful behaviors. Please review the 3 criteria listed below:

1. Student must attend school every day and be on time (no penalty for excused absences).
2. Student cannot be written up for Level 1, 2, 3 or 4 discipline (see handbook p. 29). This also includes no dress code violations (see handbook p. 21).
3. Student must demonstrate respectful behaviors as indicated on the Nā Koa Respect Rubric.

Desired Behavior Meets Does Not Meet
Student speaks in a kind manner.
  • Friendly tone
  • Kind words:  please, thank you, excuse me, etc.
  • Loud or mean tone

  • Uses mean words
Student includes others, not only friends.
  • Invites others to the group
  • Includes them in work or play
  • Excludes others
  • Ignores the student that’s being excluded
Student solves problems in an appropriate way.
  • Uses words to solve problems
  • Tells an adult when needed
  • Puts hands on others
  • Student allows behavior to continue

Aloha & Welcome Back

Welcome to the Counseling Corner, the blogsite for the Kula Ha`aha`a counselors, Mr. Kudo and Mrs. Kāneakua. We’d like to use this first post to tell you a little bit about what we do here at school. We feel so fortunate to be able to serve you, our haumāna and families. We know that we are blessed to have two counselors here and really enjoy the partnership that we share with each other and with you.

The following are some of the many things we do here at school:

  • Teach Guidance classes – currently Mr. Kudo is in the upper elementary classrooms (grades 3-5) and Mrs. Kāneakua is in the lower elementary classes (grades K-2) Guidance classes cover three areas of development: personal/social, academic, and career.
  • Individual/Group counseling sessions – Counselors meet with students during their lunch to discuss various topics such as: Family Change, Grief, or Making and Keeping Friends.
  • Monitor attendance, the Nā Koa program, and provide support to students and families

Please don’t hesitate to contact either of us at anytime:

Tim Kudo – 982-0235 – tikudo@ksbe.edu

Tracy Kāneakua – 982-0267 – trkaneak@ksbe.edu

We look forward to hearing from you.
