Imagine Peace One Day–We Can!

Yesterday September 21st, over 256 pinwheels were installed on the main campus road and will whirl through the weekend to acknowledge International Day of Peace.  It is really “art from the heart,” as keiki include prayers, poems and wishes for a better world. These pinwheels are a symbol made by our children…they are a symbol that they can make a difference.  Many of the classes were inspired by Mandalas created by Tibetan monks.  We learned their mandala was a journey of prayer and meditation for peace. We hope the thoughts and quotes on the mini banners help each of us remember to create a culture of peace…one smile at time.

Of course this project could not have happened without many helping hands. A big mahalo to parents and ʻōhana who spent many hours constructing these delightful symbol and  to our amazing parents and students who helped install 256+ pinwheels Wednesday afternoon.  The Keaau showers managed to dry up just in time for installation and we worked extra fast to beat the next downpour!  Check out the journey of our tenth installation….

And what would the journey be without our keiki breaking into song.  As usual Mrs. Debus brought melodious voices to our morning with an original composition by Kumu Silva. It brought tears to the eyes of our kumu. Take a listen…

This year with the help of our KS grounds crew, operations team and Mr. Kamisato (MS photographer extraordinaire) we added a whole school photo.  All keiki and staff created a peace symbol outside of Hāʻaeamahi dining hall.  I was amazed, as each class took their spot how quiet the keiki became.  The rainy skies held off, we had perfect cloud cover; there was such joy and cooperation.  The overall photo will be one we can treasure for years to come.
