{"id":33,"date":"2011-10-11T16:02:31","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T02:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/stpetner\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2019-10-17T06:39:18","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T16:39:18","slug":"syllabus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/stpetner\/syllabus\/","title":{"rendered":"Syllabus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kamehameha Middle School \u2013 Hawai\u2018i \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Grade 7 English Language Arts (E\/LA)<\/p>\n<p>Course Syllabus\u00a0 2019 \u2013 2020 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mr. Petner \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Room 104<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Grade 7 English Language Arts course the class time will be broken up into focusing on reading and writing skills and practice.\u00a0 For Reading, the class will deal with developing the student\u2019s knowledge of vocabulary, comprehension reading strategies, understanding literary techniques, and encouraging independent reading.\u00a0 Students will be asked to read a variety of classroom materials to apply the specific strategies learned.\u00a0 Students will also be asked to complete independent novel reading and complete projects\/writings about the specific literary techniques used in the novel. For writing, the class will deal with practicing the conventions of writing and completing process writing tasks. Students will complete various types of essay writing that includes understanding and using the Six Traits of Writing. I look forward to a year full of learning and success for all students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Goals: \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Students will use strategies to develop vocabulary knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>2. Students will use strategic reading skills with all information they are required to read to improve comprehension.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Students will use various graphic organizers to improve comprehension.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Students will monitor their reading and fix-up problems that could interfere with comprehension.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Students will respond to their reading by determining the main ideas and details in what they read.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 Students will take notes about and summarize what they read.<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 Students will use the writing conventions correctly to show their knowledge of mechanics, usage, grammar, and spelling. (MUGS)<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 Students will include the Six Traits of Writing with different types of essays.<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 Students will learn how to respond to literature text they read.<\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0 Students will complete independently read novels for continued vocabulary and comprehension development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course of Study:<\/strong>\u00a0 The following is a general outline of the course content. \u00a0For reading time, we will focus on vocabulary development, comprehension development, and major literary techniques found in fiction.
