School owned instruments are made available to students.\u00a0 This course is repeatable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jazz Rock Ensemble<\/strong> [MH04269] &#8211; Year A\/B<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This advanced course encourages players of popular music to develop their skills, abilities, and potential through collaboration with other musicians and live concert performances.\u00a0 Students will be introduced to a variety of musical styles, such as: pop, rock, reggae, jazz, blues, island grooves, etc.\u00a0 School owned instruments are made available to students.\u00a0 Prerequisites: Must be able to play one of the following instruments: vocals, drum set, guitar, bass, piano, \u2018ukulele, trumpet, trombone or saxophone. This course is repeatable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chorus I<\/strong> [MH04201] &#8211; Year A\/B<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This introductory course develops fundamental vocal skills and techniques necessary to perform in a choir.\u00a0 Basic music theory and performance techniques are covered, as well as a wide range of musical styles and repertoire.\u00a0 Students will have opportunity to perform before others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chorus II<\/strong> [MH04230] \u00a0&#8211; Year A\/B<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This intermediate course further develops fundamental vocal skills and techniques to perform in a choir.\u00a0 Topics covered are a continuation of basic music theory and performance techniques, as well as a wide range of musical styles and repertoire.\u00a0 Students will have opportunity to perform before others.\u00a0 Prerequisite:\u00a0 Chorus I.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Select Chorus<\/strong> [MH04204] \u00a0&#8211; Year A\/B<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This advanced course is designed to produce a performing ensemble of high quality that can represent Kamehameha Schools Maui on special occasions. Throughout the term we will cover a wide range of musical styles. Hawaiian music and language will be an important focus. This class requires all students to memorize an extensive repertoire and to participate in performances, activities and special occasions after school. It also requires all students to exhibit excellence in behavior on and off campus.\u00a0 Prerequisite: Teacher consent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guitar<\/strong> [MH04221] \u00a0&#8211; Semester Daily<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This course introduces basic guitar skills, including strumming patterns, picking techniques, scales, reading chord charts, music notation and tablature.\u00a0 We will play a variety of music styles including Hawaiian, contemporary and jazz.\u00a0 Open to grades 9-12.\u00a0 Class size is limited to ten (10) students.<\/p>\n<p><b>Hula I [MH04285] &#8211; <\/b>Semester A\/B<br \/>\n<i>0.5 Credits.<\/i> This is an introduction to Hawaiian chant and dance: basic dance skills, history and a repertoire of chants and dances, aspects of Hawaiian language, poetry, culture and traditional stories. Proper protocol for hula performance will be discussed. Students may be expected to perform in a concert situation at the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p><b>Hula II [MH04286]<\/b> &#8211; Semester A\/B<br \/>\n<i>0.5 Credits. <\/i>This is an intermediate course and a continuation of Hula I that increases a students\u2019 repertoire of chants and dances. Students may be expected to perform in a concert situation during the course of the semester. Topics covered expand on concepts covered in Hula I. Prerequisites: Hula I or teacher consent.<\/p>\n<p><b>Advanced Hula [MH04287] <\/b> &#8211; Semester A\/B<br \/>\n<i>0.5 Credits. <\/i>This advanced course is a continuation of Hula II, designed to teach students an extensive repertoire of Hawaiian chants, songs, and dances. Students continue to research the history and meaning of each chant\/dance, reinforcing their artistic expression. Students are expected to display a high level of excellence in performance and behavior at all times. Required performances at various Kamehameha and community functions (i.e., ceremonies, blessings, dedications, etc.). After school rehearsals may be required to prepare for special events. A greater emphasis will be placed on the performance aspect of Hula where students are expected to practice proper protocol. Prerequisites: Hula II, or teacher consent.<\/p>\n<p><b>Papa Mele &#8211; Hawaiian Music [MH09675] &#8211; <\/b>Semester Daily<br \/>\n<i>1 Credit. <\/i>Hawaiian music continues to be a means by which Hawaiian culture, language, and values are perpetuated. This course develops an appreciation for traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music. Genres to be discussed include chant, <i>h\u012bmen<\/i>i, falsetto, chalangalang, hapa haole, and contemporary Hawaiian music. Instrumental styles include traditional implements, \u00ffukulele, slack key and steel guitar. Students will study, analyze, discuss, and perform an array of Hawaiian songs \u2013 their meanings, significance, history, <i>kaona<\/i>, and forms. Emphasis is placed on performance. Prerequisite: Hawaiian I.\u00a0<i> <\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Piano I<\/strong> [MH04259] &#8211; Semester Daily<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit.<\/em>\u00a0 Introduction to beginning piano keyboard skills.\u00a0 Topics covered include music theory, music terminology and music reading.\u00a0 We will learn to play in a variety of styles and learn music from different periods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Piano II<\/strong> [MH04260] &#8211; Semester Daily<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This intermediate course helps students to continue to learn piano techniques, music theory, music terminology and music reading.\u00a0 We will learn to play in a variety of styles and learn music from different periods. Students may have opportunities to perform for others.\u00a0 Prerequisite: Piano I or teacher recommendation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Piano III<\/strong> [MH04261] &#8211; Semester Daily<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This intermediate level course helps students to continue to learn piano techniques, music theory, music terminology and music reading.\u00a0 We will learn to play in a variety of styles and learn music from different periods. Students will have opportunities to perform for others.\u00a0 Prerequisites: Piano II or teacher recommendation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advanced Piano<\/strong> [MH04262] &#8211; Semester Daily<br \/>\n<em>1 Credit<\/em>.\u00a0 This course helps students to continue to learn piano techniques, music theory, music terminology and music reading.\u00a0 Students will work independently on individualized repertoire.\u00a0 Students will learn to play in a variety of styles and learn music from different periods. Students will have opportunities to perform for others.\u00a0 Prerequisites: Piano III or teacher recommendation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction to Theatre [MH04319] &#8211; <\/b>Semester A\/B<br \/>\n<i>0.5 Credits. <\/i>No previous experience is necessary. The main goal of this course is to introduce the young person to the world of theatre and its elements. Acting fundamentals, technical theatre, realistic theatre, children\u2019s theatre, Greek theatre, and Shakespeare are but a few of the topics covered in this course. Activities include theatre games, improvisation, acting and scene work. This course is not repeatable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Theatre Performance [MH04342]<\/b> &#8211; Semester A\/B<br \/>\n<i>0.5 Credits.<\/i> This is an advanced course for serious students of Acting, as the focus of this course is play production and performance. In addition, various playwrights, directing, acting styles and playwriting will be studied. This course may be repeated. Prerequisite: Introduction to Theatre.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2018Ukulele I [MH04203] &#8211;<\/b> Semester Daily<br \/>\n<i>1 Credit.<\/i> This course introduces basic \u2018ukulele skills, including strumming patterns, picking techniques, reading chord charts, music notation and some tablature.
