Library Policy I

Our children have been reviewing the library policy and procedures of the Learning Center.  We continue to uphold the library standards and expectations that promote learning, responsibility, and safety while in the library.  Here are just some of the library policy that we all need to follow.  Look for more blog posts on Library Policy II.

DREAM BIG READ! Summer Reading Program

Children are invited to visit their local library, read at least one book per week and received a free reading incentive, while supplies last. Hawaii’s public libraries will provide free fun programs and activities encouraging young readers to revel in the wonders of night-dreams, lullabies, bedtime and campfire stories, as well as ghosts, nocturnal animals, and star-gazing!

The five-week program will also feature excellent, family-friendly storytelling performances statewide by mainland and local artists. Performances are currently being finalized and a schedule will be posted online soon.

Researching Parts of the World

Our Papa ‘Ekolu demonstrated the skills learned in their “Mini-Research Project”.  From note-taking, to using informational features, and creating citations for each resource used; these students did very well as they worked together and collaborated in small groups.  So proud of them! Snaps for Papa ‘Ekolu!

Just a friendly reminder the last day of circulation is Friday, May 11, 2012! What does this mean? It means ALL library materials are due back to the learning center at the end of the school day.  The last day to pay ALL fines and return overdue library items is Thursday, May 17, 2012. ALL library items and fines must be cleared to receive your report card, year book, and new class assignment for next school year.  If you have any questions, please come as see Kumu Kanani in the Learning Center.

Writing a 5 W’s Poem

Have you ever written a Five W’s poem before? It’s simple and easy to write! Take a look at the poem above.  It answers the questions Who, what, where, when, and why.  Our Papa ‘Ekahi have been busy writing poems in various formats (couplet, word cinquain, & five w’s).  They wrote a poem about themselves and even wrote poems about character’s that they recently read about (Ruby & Grandfather  in the book Ruby’s Wish.  Amelia Bedelia & Cousin Alcolu  in the Amelia Bedelia Series. Percula & her mate in the book Coral Reef Hideaway). If you like poetry, go to the “menu” bar at the top of my blog and click on Online Resources.  There you will find 3 poetry websites with a variety of poems that you can view and listen to.  Enjoy!
