Week of March 4 – 8

Trimester 2 Conferences: Student-Led Conferences will be held this Thursday and Friday. Mahalo to all ‘ohana for signing up via sign up genius.

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be going home tomorrow (Tues.). Please make sure to check your keiki’s folder. Progress report and MAP Test scores will be sealed in an envelope.

Jump Rope for Heart: Jump Rope for Heart will be held this Thursday, March 7. Please make sure your keiki comes prepared for this fun event (uniform shorts).

Kumuola: We are going to Kumuola this Wed. Please have your keiki prepare as we’ve done for the past recent trips to Kumuola. **Please mark your calendars, our end of the year hō’ike and learning showcase will be on Tuesday, May 14, at Kumuola. All ‘ohana are invited to come and see our papa 1’s amazing presentations that will exhibit their learning for the year.

March 11-14: Please be advise that both Kumu Young and I will be off island attending a workshop from March 11-14. We will be back to class on Friday, March 15.

Spring Break: Spring Break is March 18 – March 22. Students will be back at school on Monday, March 25. Then, there will be no school on Tuesday, March 26 in observance of Kūhio Day.

Week of Feb. 25 – March 1

Spring Concert: Updated letter concerning our Spring Concert was sent home today. Concert is set to start at 6:00 pm. Please drop your keiki off at our classroom at 530 pm. Mrs. Debus did send a letter home recently concerning concert attire. She did suggest that keiki come dressed in some type of cultural costume/ethnic. Any questions, please let us know.

Progress Reports: Progress reports will go home on Tuesday, March, 5, 2019. Please review prior to your scheduled conference time.

Student Led Conferences: Please make sure to sign up for next week’s conferences. Deadline to sign up is this Thursday. Conferences will be held in the same location as first trimester, in the office.

Kumu PD: Just an FYI, from March 11 – 14, I will be off island attending a math conference. Our keiki will have a guest kumu for these 4 days that I am away. I will return to school on Fri, March 15.

‘Ōiwi Edge T-Shirt Orders are due by this Friday, March 1, 2019. order forms were sent home last week with your keiki. If you need another order form, please let me know.

Spring Break: March 18 – 22

Week of Feb. 19 – 22

Spring Concert: Spring concert is fast approaching. Spring Concert is on Friday, March 1 Program is scheduled to start at 6:00. I will resend the note that Mrs. Debus sent home a few weeks ago concerning our upcoming concert.

Kumuola: We will be going to Kumuola on Wed., 2/20. Have your keiki come to school in clothes that can get Please have your keiki come to prepared with extra clothes, tabis (optional) in a plastic bag in their bag pack.

Student-Led Conferences: Student-Led conferences are scheduled for March 7 – 8. Please watch for sign-up genius. Deadline to sign-up will be Thursday, Feb. 28. After Feb. 28, those ‘ohana that didn’t sign up will be scheduled into remaining open slots.

Planners: Please check your keiki’s planner daily. Folders needs to be check, remove all work from “keep” side. And please make sure your keiki reads daily and complete the book log. Reading is important to be done and logged daily.

Week of Feb. 11 – 15

Lamakū Speech Finals: Congratulations to Jaydie Kobayashi and Jazzmyne Barto who have been selected to represent our papa 1 on Wednesday to recite their personal poems.

End of Trimester 2: Wednesday is the last day of trimester 2.

No school: There is no school for students on Thursday, this is a teacher workday. There is also no school on Friday for students, this is a PD day for kumu. Also, no school on Monday in observance of President’s day.

Uniform: Recently, many keiki have been coming to school with no belts. If your keiki is wearing pants or shorts, belts are required. I have also noticed some not following the rules for outerwear. Please be mindful that only Kamehameha logo outerwear are ok, other than that, outerwear needs to be a plain solid black, navy blue, white or gray.

Week of Feb. 4 – Feb. 8

I Mua Week: Please refer to announcement sent home or last week’s blog concerning daily theme for dress up as we show school spirit this week. Have fun!!

Pilina Luncheon: Tomorrow is the last of our piling luncheons. Mahalo nui to all ‘ohana who have already joined your keiki for lunch and I look forward to seeing the rest of you tomorrow. The keiki are extremely excited to share lunch with their ‘ohana, Mahalo nui for making time for this special time with your keiki.

No School: No School on Thursday, 2/14, Friday, 2/15 and Monday, 2/18. We have a teacher workday (end of trimester 2), teacher in-service and President’s Day holiday.

Lāmakū Finals: On Wed., Feb 13 is our Lamakū Speech Presentations. Our keiki are actively composing and memorizing their poems they will recite this Friday in class. 5 will move forward to recite their poems among both papa 1. From their, 2 keiki from each class will have the honor to share their poem with the whole school on Feb. 13.

Doubles: We are currently learning about doubles during math. Students understand that addition with doubles are even numbers and that these numbers increase by two. They are also noticing doubles in our classroom and environment.

Reading: Students have been working on looking for text to text, text to self or text to world connections when they read. We have also been talking about making predictions and inferences when reading a story in order to improve compression and understanding of what they read.

Week of Jan. 28 – Feb. 1

IMUA Week: Next week is IMUA week. The school has generously printed new ‘Ōiwi Edge Shirts for all of our keiki here at the kula hahaha’a. They will be sent home tomorrow with your keiki. We are requesting everyone to show their school pride as we kick off I Mua Week by wearing our new ‘Ōiwi Edge t-shirt next week Monday, 2/4/19. Here is the schedule of events:

End of Tri. 2: Tri. 2 will end on Feb.13: Can’t believe that we are fast approaching the end of the second trimester. It is amazing to see the growth in each keiki. We have just completed MAP testing in the area of math and individual reading assessments. Students will begin working on their e-portfolio in preparation for upcoming student-led conferences.

Week of Jan. 22 – 25

Kumuola: We will be going to Kumuola this Wednesday. As usual, please have them come in clothes that can get wet, ok to wear slippers. If your keiki has tabis or reef shoes, please bring too. We are kindly asking that your pack your keiki’s extra change of clothes in their backpacks. We are hoping that having the keiki carry their own backpacks will be more efficient as far as loading bus and cutting time for keiki to find their change of clothes. Please kōkua and make sure your keiki cleans out their backpack of anything that is not necessary. I will make sure that they unpack their planners and leave it on their desk on Wed.

Pilina ‘Ohana Luncheon: Today is our second pilina ‘ohana luncheon. Pilina ‘ohana luncheon continues every Tuesday through Feb. 5.

Charles Reed Bishop Convocation on Friday. Please make sure your keiki comes dressed in their uniform dress whites.

Aloha Wear Day is this Thursday.

Kupuna Project: As we begin our writing project on their kupuna videos, I may as keiki to come home to confirm spelling on their kupuna’s name. Mahalo for your kōkua.

Week of Jan. 13 – 18

MAP Testing: MAP testing will be held on Tuesday. This is our winter math assessment. Scores will be shared with you during our 2 trimester conferences. Please make sure your keiki gets a good nights rest and please make sue they have breakfast on Tuesday.

Reading Assessments: On Friday, I will be conducting reading assessments with our papa 1. Our keiki will have a sub for the day so that I may work with each keiki independently.

Language Arts: We will begin focusing on Non Fiction Text (informational text) as it compares to Fiction. A goal is that our keiki will understand that fiction text tells a story and non fiction shares information. We will also be focusing on the major features of non fiction text. We will also start a mini unit on Poetry as we prepare for our upcoming Lamakū Speech Festival.

IXL issues: Mahalo nui of all ‘ohana who shared their iPad issues last week. For some reason, everyone was unable to log on. I am currently talking to our tech kumu to find a solution to this problem by this Thursday. Mahalo for your patience.

Pilina ‘Ohana Luncheons: Pilina ‘Ohana Luncheons for papa 1 begins this Tuesday and for the next 3 Tuesdays. Mahalo for turning in your rsvp letters, this will enable us to provide an accurate head count for lunch. If you haven’t turned in your rsvp, please do so:)

Kumuola: We will have a second visit this month to Kumuola, on Wed. Jan. 23. Please have your keiki mākaukau. I will remind everyone again next week.

Food Bank Collection: In celebration of a 100th day of school, we will be collecting can goods for the Food Bank. Our goal is to collect a 100 pounds of can goods. Please read the announcement going home with your keiki today.

Week of Jan. 7 – 11

Welcome Back: Aloha kākou and welcome back to school! I look forward to the New Year ahead!

Important Announcements: Please check your keiki’s folder tomorrow for important announcements/info. coming home. Hālau Kupukupu Summer School catalog, Ho’olaule’a Packet, and MAP Testing schedule will be coming home with your keiki.

Kumuola on Wednesday: On Wednesday, we will be going to Kumuola for our monthly visit. Like previous huaka’i there, please make sure they come dressed in clothes that can get wet and pack extra clothes. Students may come to school with slippers. If your Meiji has tabis, have them bring to huaka’i. As much as possible, please make sure that your keiki’s things are labeled with their names.

Week of Dec. 17 – 19

Secret Santa Gift Exchange: Today was the deadline to turn your keiki’s secret Santa gift exchange. If you haven’t yet, tomorrow would be the absolute last day. $5.00 minimal. If you have a son, by a gift for a boy. If you have a daughter, buy a gift for a girl.

 Founder’s Day on Wednesday: Please refer to last week’s blog and announcement I sent home last week regarding Founder’s Day. Don’t forget to join us back at the K-1 pod as our keiki share the gift of mele for you all. *Don’t forget, school ends at 11:15 am on Wednesday.
