9/12 Human Rights Quote Homework Sample 2

“My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.”

John F. Kennedy, Inaugural Speech January 20, 1961

I chose this excerpt from JFK’s famous speech as my anchor text for my human rights advocacy. I believe that if all countries in the word work with America, that freedom to enjoy universal human rights will belong to all people.

Human Rights Quote Homework Sample 1

I chose the chorus from the song “Shake It Off” as the anchor text for my universal human rights advocacy. I believe that there will always be people who try to take away my human rights, as well as the rights of others. I won’t let this keep me from helping myself and others to achieve our rights that we have just because we are human. I will just “shake it off” and keep going.

9/11 Homework tonight

Students were assigned their Newsela reading, and we read the text features together in class, determined the topic and the central idea, and added the paragraph numbers for text citations. Students are to closely read the entire article, and provide annotations for each paragraph. Authors are adding information with each paragraph, and students are to determine what that new information is, and summarize it in their own words in their annotations.

These annotations are due by Wednesday in class.

9/7 Tomorrow’s summative performance

Tomorrow students will be performing a Theater in the Round, their summative understanding of Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech to the United Nations.  Practice reciting the quotation articulately, and using the facial expression that best convey her message.

If all goes well, I hope to video the presentation and post on the blog.

9/5 Homework due Thursday

Students were given an excerpt from Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech to the United Nations to memorize by Thursday’s classes.  Ask your student what they know about Eleanor Roosevelt.  We analyzed the text and practiced fluency and the oral use of punctuation.  They tried to create pictures or short phrases to help them to remember.  They can break down the work to three sentences tonight, and three sentences tomorrow.

8/21 In class today

We reviewed our close reading of the Hokule`a, and took a common core reading standards (CCRS) quiz, focusing on central idea, and people and events.  Together we read the questions, and the answer choices, and strategized on what the best answers would be, based upon the text evidence.

We began our tableaux lesson, unfortunately both classes were cut short by today’s fire drill.  We will catch up tomorrow.

Check KS connect for the latest grades, and please consider signing up for Remind for the Class of 2024, as well as for social studies semester 1.
