{"id":59,"date":"2012-03-10T08:22:38","date_gmt":"2012-03-10T08:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/naisconference\/?p=59"},"modified":"2012-03-10T08:22:38","modified_gmt":"2012-03-10T08:22:38","slug":"march-2-blended-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/naisconference\/2012\/03\/10\/march-2-blended-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"March 2 &#8211; Blended Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Necessity is the mother of invention.\u00a0 We heard from a MS math teacher and a MS engineering class teacher at an all girls&#8217; school.\u00a0 The latter undertook blended learning to beat the bell schedule.\u00a0 The schedule did not prpovide sufficient time to saw and hammer and build so they took all the content out of the classroom and online.<\/p>\n<p>In these 2 schools, students use this platform to share.\u00a0 For example, students video record to explain how to do a math problem.\u00a0 Through this process, the math teacher usually met the entire family throughout the school year as they would occassionally appear on student videos.\u00a0 e.g.\u00a0a MS girl\u00a0 showed herself teaching her young brother andcousin the math problem.<\/p>\n<p>Both teachers said to focus the classroom time on things that are\u00a0better to do in groups or with each other.\u00a0 Use the time to teach kids to work collaboratively with each other.<\/p>\n<p>For example in the engineering class they designed and built solar ovens how to take a hands on learing into blended learning? (5th grade)\u00a0 Learning online (need to know about solor energy and photovltaic\u00a0 is b4 building solar oven).\u00a0 Girls wouls learn and respond online. Teacher started to hear from kids they never heard in class.\u00a0 Increased their engagement.\u00a0 Kids would stop teachers around campus and discuss project and online learning.\u00a0 Familiies got involved with discussions.\u00a0 Kids started doing own research online.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher used Wiley E. Coyote and other You Tube videos to help learning at the interest level of 5th grade teaches.\u00a0 Video submssions &#8211; not sure would get this from kids in classroom.\u00a0 Takes lot of time to view videos so ts a balancing act.\u00a0 On the other end, teachers should keep\u00a0their vidoes\u00a0 short &#8211; what do they really need to know?\u00a0 Hardest thing for teachers is not to create 4-hr video.\u00a0 lots of tings out there -take advantagre of mulit media to help kids learn and retain.\u00a0 use You Tube.\u00a0 don&#8217;t just recreate classroom online.<\/p>\n<p>Lot of time in the summer spent in by teachers but once created &#8211;
