{"id":37,"date":"2023-08-07T14:10:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T00:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/mespence\/"},"modified":"2023-08-07T14:07:14","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T00:07:14","slug":"papa-nohona-hawaii-syllabus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/mespence\/","title":{"rendered":"Syllabus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><strong>Kamehameha Schools Kula Waena <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><strong class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Pepa Pahuhopu Papa \u02bb\u014clelo Hawai\u02bbi <\/strong><strong class=\"default_cursor_cs\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Kumu Melelani Spencer<\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Leka uila: <a href=\"mailto:mespence@ksbe.edu\">mespence@ksbe.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Helu Kelepona: (808) 982-0265<\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><strong>Ku i ka m\u0101na<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like the one from whom he recieved what he learned.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Haum\u0101na recieves knowledge from the mouth of his teacher.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><u>Overview<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The sixth grade Hawaiian Language program at Kamehameha schools Hawai\u02bbi will help develop an understanding and appreciation of \u02bbIke Hawai\u02bbi (Goal 3.2 of the Strategic Plan) through cultural knowledge, understanding, and a unified set of cultural principles which includes values, practices, language, history and oral traditions.<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Content<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Students will use rich Hawaiian language to express, give details and talk about who they are, where they come from, their likes and dislikes in different topics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><strong>Makahiki I<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ho\u02bbokama\u02bb\u0101ina<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This unit will cover simple greetings, names, date, colors, and weather.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"default_cursor_cs\">\u02bbOhana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the \u02bbohana unit the students will identify and talk about their \u02bbohana members.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hale<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">The hale unit will discuss in general \u201cWhere I live.\u201dIdentify various rooms in my house and activities that I do in and around the house.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kula<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">In the kula unit the students will be able to identify and talk about their school, classmates, teachers and school activities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Kaiaulu<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The kaiaulu unit will identify and talk about people and places in our community.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mea\u02bbai<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the mea\u02bbai unit the disccussion will be about food. Likes, dislikes, meals, \u00a0\u00a0some traditional Hawaiian foods, catergorizing and expressing their own ideas about food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><strong>Makahiki II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This section was created for students comming into Kula Waena from KS Elementary and Hawaiian Language Medium Schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Moku O Keawe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this unit studetns will learn about the different characteristics of our Moku(island).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"default_cursor_cs\">L\u0101hui<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This unit talks about the different L\u0101hui or ethnicities found in Hawai\u02bbi.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kai<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this unit students learn about the ocean<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mea\u02bbai<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this unit students learn about the different types of food we eat in Hawai\u02bbi.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u02bba<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this unit students learn about the fishes in out ocean.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lole<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this unit students learn terms used for clothes.<\/p>\n<p><u>Course materials<\/u> \u2013 references needed (<em>for home use<\/em>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Puke Wehewehe \u02bb\u014clelo Hawai\u02bbi \u2013 Elbert and P\u016bku\u02bbi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Learner Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">The sixth grade student will participate and engage in activities that are culturallyhealthy and appropriate. Activities and lessons will reflect and support the belief statements of the Kamehameha Schools Philosophy of Education as well as the guidelines set forth in <em>Honua Mauli Ola:<\/em> Guidelines for culturallyHealthy and Responsive Learning Environments(2002,NHEC&amp;UHH)<\/p>\n<p>Students are expected to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Participate in class all activities<\/li>\n<li>Show respect to to their Kumu and peers.<\/li>\n<li>Consistantly use Hawaiian language including vocabulary, sentences and phrases learned in class.<\/li>\n<li>Come to class prepared. This includes have the appropriate supplies for class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Grading Policy<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Assignments are broken into two catergories, <em>formative and summative <\/em>assessments. Formatives will make up 20% of the final grade. Summative assessments are assignments that will measure the students learning. Summative assessments will make up 80% of the final grade.<\/p>\n<p><u>Attendance<\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Attendance is important for your child\u02bbs success here at Kamehameha Schools if he\/she is absent due to an illness or an emergency, please make sure to contact the school office. Students have five days to make up their missed assignments starting on the date of their return to school.
