A.      DESCRIPTIONThese math courses are designed to provide students with opportunities to strengthen and extend their background in mathematics and include concepts of algebra and geometry.  Instructional practices will actively involve students in exploring, conjecturing, analyzing, problem solving, and applying mathematics in both real-world and mathematical contexts and in communicating mathematical ideas.
B.      ORGANIZATIONAn emphasis for this year is preparation for independent life-long learning.  Classes will be conducted in large and small group formats and will also involve cooperative learning and online instruction.  There will be an emphasis on developing a mathematical mindset, work completion to demonstrate learning and understanding, class preparation & participation, and test preparedness.  Appropriate behavior is expected in and out of class.  Class expectations will be reinforced throughout the year through various activities.
C.      COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand and be able to independently meet the HS math standards and develop a mathematical mindset
  2. To strengthen ability in the different strands of math and provide opportunities for individual growth and improvement.
  3. To improve in outlook, attitude, and ability towards math and using it in real-world situations.
  4. To apply the standards of Math Practice (SMPs) integrated with mathematical mindset teaching and learning.
D.      COURSE OUTLINEGeometry: Basic geometry terms, Angle relationships, Triangles, Polygons, Circles Properties, Transformations, Quadrilaterals, Pythagorean Theorem, Solids, Similarity, and Trigonometric Ratios. Standards of math practice will also be integrated in the course along with mathematical mindset teaching and learning.
E.       TEXT AND REQUIRED SUPPLIESDiscovering Geometry Textbook, Geometer’s Sketchpad, iXL, Aiwohi’s Blog, and other various materials.

Materials Needed:

  • Composition tablet for Math only
  • College-ruled paper, pencils, erasers, black or blue pen
  • 6” or 12” ruler with inch and centimeter markings
  • Compass
  • Protractor
  • A basic calculator with at least a square root button
F.       GRADING PLANAll work is graded on a point system with points being given for:  tests and quizzes, assignments, iXL, projects, and other instructional activities.  Student grades can also be accessed by parents or students online at KS Connect (http://connect.ksbe.edu/). Grades will be updated periodically.

The following grading scale will be used in calculating students’ overall grade. Assignments may also be assessed using standards based indicators as follows:
93% – 100% A
90% – 92% A- ME Meets with Excellence
87% – 89% B+ MP Meets Proficiency
83% – 86% B AP Approaching Proficiency
80% – 82% B- N Not There Yet
77% – 79% C+  Students will be encouraged to familiarize themselves with standards based grading and strive to meet standards.  Taking advantage of Re-do opportunities gives you another chance to demonstrate meeting the standard and can raise your grade.
73% – 76% C
70% – 72% C-
67% – 69% D+
63% – 66% D
60% – 62% D-
59% and below F

Progress reports can be found at KS Connect to inform parents regarding students’ grades and any missing assignments.  Students will be required to monitor their own progress on KS Connect and take responsibility for their learning.

Assignment Policy:

  • Assignments will be accepted at the beginning of the period on the due date.
  • Some assignments are “practice” and therefore NOT graded.  This will be noted with NG, not for grade, instead of having a point value.  Practice completion will be reported periodically and although not graded are highly encouraged and required if desiring to redo a graded quiz or assessment.
  • Copying of any assignments is unacceptable and will result in a ZERO for both parties involved.
  • Late assignments are discouraged but will be accepted within reason and points may be deducted.
  • Students with an excused absence will have up to 3 school days upon return to make up all missing work.  Students should also communicate with the teacher to schedule things.
  • It is the students’ responsibility to get and make up work missed due to absence.  Students are encouraged to check the board and exchange numbers with a study buddy.
ATTENDANCE: Please see KSM student handbook for absent policy.
G.     CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCTStudents will abide by the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Values.

Classroom Expectations

  • All KS Maui rules and dress code in handbook apply.
  • Enter class and participate with a Mathematical Mindset.
  • Be in assigned seat ready to work at the beginning of class. No unexcused tardies.
  • Have all needed supplies every day.
  • When using class supplies mālama and return! Or donʻt use.
  • Practice attentive listening & participate positively in class.
  • Be your Best! Make sure your work is neat, well done and on time.
H.     SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESS

  • If you have any problems or need extra help, make prior arrangements with your teachers.
  • If you are falling behind it is better to get help right away rather than wait until you are completely lost.
  • I am more than willing to provide extra help to ensure your success.  Because of this I often offer Re-dos on assignments, quizzes and tests.  Please take advantage of these since it will not only raise your grade if you progress, but it can also demonstrate that you are meeting the standards.
